[Vista] Unable to Install, or Uninstall, Adobe Reader

Windows Vista Home Premium

Adobe Reader 9.0 is installed, but I'm unable to uninstall it through the control panel, or install Reader 9.1.

The registry error is the same in both cases:

Error 1402. Could not open key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Class\Interface\(46B89F5A-769D-4792-AD9A-E3755915CB3}\TypeLib

Any ideas? Thanks!

Why do you want to uninstall? Would you consider an alternative program? I use Foxit reader for all my pdf files, and it's free

I'm trying to update from Adobe Reader 9.0 (currently installed) to 9.1. Running the 9.1 updater and attempting to uninstall 9.0 from the Control Panel give the same error mentioned above.

Thanks for tip about Foxit; I may give it a try.

Maybe give Revo uninstaller a shot? 64 Bit not supported.

Sometimes, if an Application's Uninstall info becomes corrupted in the Windows Registry, RE-Installing the original application again (directly "over top" of it's existing installation), may correct the issue, then allowing you to properly UN-install it (via Add/Remove Programs)...

The same error pops up when I try to reinstall or repair Adobe Reader 9.0.

Do you have full permissions and able to open the registry key with Regedit?

Error Opening Key

TypeLib cannot be opened.
An error is preventing this key from being opened.
Details: Access is denied.

Any suggestions?

Thanks again.

Try this tool from MS:
»support.microsoft.com/default.as···s;290301

Info on use here:
»en.kioskea.net/faq/sujet-168-imp···t-reader

If that fails I would manually remove: Delete all Program Files folders refrencing Acrobat Reader (you will have a \Common Files\Adobe folder as well), and do a search in the registry for the same and delete all keys for Acrobat Reader.

I did try Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. No go. After I removed the Adobe Reader entry, I restarted and tried to install Reader 9.1... same registry error as before.

This is for older versions, and not vista.
But solution number 2 might help.

»kb2.adobe.com/cps/329/329137.html

Also, there were 2 fixes posted in this old thread.

Also, try System Restore.
Also, try booting to Safe Mode and uninstall.

Thanks for the tips. I tried both and, unfortunately, neither worked.

Restoring security settings to default didn't work... still the exact same registry error as before. But, thank you for the suggestion.

Do you get that same error in "Safe Mode"?

I rebooted into safe mode, but was unable to install or uninstall anything because the Windows Installer wasn't running. Did I miss something? Should I try safe mode with networking?

I would think the Windows Installer would be running in Safe Mode. But check your Services and start the Windows Installer if it is not started. The retry.

Start > Run > services.msc

The Windows Installer may not run in Safe Mode.

However I was under the impression that you could not modify the permissions on the following registry key using regedit:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Class\Interface\(46B89F5A-769D-4792-AD9A-E3755915CB3}\TypeLib

Do you get an "access denied" error trying to modify the permissions at that key?

If so, does the same error occur in Safe Mode?
