[Vista] Unable to Install, or Uninstall, Adobe Reader

Windows Vista Home Premium

Adobe Reader 9.0 is installed, but I'm unable to uninstall it through the control panel, or install Reader 9.1.

The registry error is the same in both cases:

Error 1402. Could not open key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Class\Interface\(46B89F5A-769D-4792-AD9A-E3755915CB3}\TypeLib

Any ideas? Thanks!

Re: [Vista] Unable to Install, or Uninstall, Adobe Reader

Why do you want to uninstall? Would you consider an alternative program? I use Foxit reader for all my pdf files, and it's free

Re: [Vista] Unable to Install, or Uninstall, Adobe Reader

I'm trying to update from Adobe Reader 9.0 (currently installed) to 9.1. Running the 9.1 updater and attempting to uninstall 9.0 from the Control Panel give the same error mentioned above.

Thanks for tip about Foxit; I may give it a try.

Re: [Vista] Unable to Install, or Uninstall, Adobe Reader

Sometimes, if an Application's Uninstall info becomes corrupted in the Windows Registry, RE-Installing the original application again (directly "over top" of it's existing installation), may correct the issue, then allowing you to properly UN-install it (via Add/Remove Programs)...

The same error pops up when I try to reinstall or repair Adobe Reader 9.0.

Do you have full permissions and able to open the registry key with Regedit?

Error Opening Key

TypeLib cannot be opened.
An error is preventing this key from being opened.
Details: Access is denied.

Any suggestions?

Thanks again.

Restoring security settings to default didn't work... still the exact same registry error as before. But, thank you for the suggestion.

Do you get that same error in "Safe Mode"?

Re: [Vista] Unable to Install, or Uninstall, Adobe Reader

I rebooted into safe mode, but was unable to install or uninstall anything because the Windows Installer wasn't running. Did I miss something? Should I try safe mode with networking?

Re: [Vista] Unable to Install, or Uninstall, Adobe Reader

I would think the Windows Installer would be running in Safe Mode. But check your Services and start the Windows Installer if it is not started. The retry.

Start > Run > services.msc

The Windows Installer may not run in Safe Mode.

However I was under the impression that you could not modify the permissions on the following registry key using regedit:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Class\Interface\(46B89F5A-769D-4792-AD9A-E3755915CB3}\TypeLib

Do you get an "access denied" error trying to modify the permissions at that key?

If so, does the same error occur in Safe Mode?

Re: [Vista] Unable to Install, or Uninstall, Adobe Reader

On a side note tangent, I don't have a Class key on my Vista 32bit Home Basic system.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Class

On my system I have
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes

You are right. Windows Installer does not run in Safe Mode. I never knew programs could not be installed/uninstalled in Safe Mode.

I just tried to start the Windows Installer Service in Safe Mode and got a 1084 error. Also tried to uninstall Adobe Reader 9.1 and couldn't because Windows Installer wasn't running.

I'm not even able to open the key, so it's not possible to change its permissions

Edit: I just rebooted and cofirmed that Windows Installer is always disabled in Safe Mode.

Before opening regedit.exe, can you right-click regedit.exe and select "Run as administrator".

Also, to rule out a problem with your user account, can you try another user account with administrator privileges (create one if necessary) and see if the same problems exist.

Try this tool from MS:
»support.microsoft.com/default.as···s;290301

Info on use here:
»en.kioskea.net/faq/sujet-168-imp···t-reader

If that fails I would manually remove: Delete all Program Files folders refrencing Acrobat Reader (you will have a \Common Files\Adobe folder as well), and do a search in the registry for the same and delete all keys for Acrobat Reader.

I did try Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. No go. After I removed the Adobe Reader entry, I restarted and tried to install Reader 9.1... same registry error as before.

This is for older versions, and not vista.
But solution number 2 might help.

»kb2.adobe.com/cps/329/329137.html

Also, there were 2 fixes posted in this old thread.

Also, try System Restore.
Also, try booting to Safe Mode and uninstall.

Thanks for the tips. I tried both and, unfortunately, neither worked.

You might try RegSeeker.

RegSeeker has a registry editor "Find in Registry" that allows you to delete keys. Maybe RegSeeker can bypass the premissions problem.

Assuming I could delete that particular key, would that solve the problem of installing/uninstalling? I'm leary that getting rid of the key would leave me with a worse mess, with perhaps Adobe Reader 9.0 not working at all.

Also, I tried running RegEdit as Administrator and could still not open the key ... same error.

What I am guessing is that the uninstaller is hanging on this registry key, and there are probably more invalid keys after this one. After you delete this key, the next invalid key will stop the uninstaller. You will have to keep deleting each invalid key until they are all deleted. Then the uninstaller will be able to finish the uninstall.

To be safe, first export the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Class\Interface\(46B89F5A-769D-4792-AD9A-E3755915CB3}\TypeLib, or create a system restore point.
If something goes terribly wrong, then reinstall the exported registry key, or revert back to the previous restore point.

Sorry it took so long, but an error prevented me from even deleting the TypeLib key... "Error while deleting key"

At this point, I may wait for Windows 7 and perform a clean install.

Re: [Vista] Unable to Install, or Uninstall, Adobe Reader

If this were to happen to Me, at this point, I would:
Back-Up all critical data (or do a Full image backup of the OS partition to DVDRs, or to another HD with Acronis, or GHOST).
Perform a "Repair Install" of Vista.
See if that fixes the issue.

If not, (or if the Repair install should go badly), then I'd restore the OS partition from backup, or just do a Total Reinstall of Windows.

Was this a Window's error message, or a RegSeeker error?
Give RegSeeker a try, if you havn't already.

Yes, it was a Windows error message as I tried to delete the key from within RegEdit.

For some reason, I'm unable to find the key using RegSeeker.

Edit: OK, found the key, and RegSeeker was unable to delete it either.

Right-Click on the Adobe shortcut on the desktop> left-click on propatee>click on "advance">click in the box for Run as adminastrator.
Click "ok" then come out , and then try to uninstall.
If that doesn't work, download JV16powertool
here: »www.macecraft.com/
Install, then open,then SystemTools>Software Uninstall>find Adobe>checkmark it >Custom Uninstall> Find registry keys>Select all> delete > close> Restart
Now try to Install, if that doesn,t work I don,t know what else to do.
Hope that this helps

Have you turned off UAC? If you have, turn it back on, reboot your computer and re-attempt the uninstallation of the old version of Adobe. Remember to "Run as Administrator" when you run the .exe for the new version of Adobe.

Worked for me once upon a time.
