| [Vista] Unable to Install, or Uninstall, Adobe Reader Windows Vista Home Premium
Adobe Reader 9.0 is installed, but I'm unable to uninstall it through the control panel, or install Reader 9.1.
The registry error is the same in both cases:
Error 1402. Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Class\Interface\(46B89F5A-769D-4792-AD9A-E3755915CB3}\TypeLib
Any ideas? Thanks! | |

Thanks for tip about Foxit; I may give it a try.

Do you have full permissions and able to open the registry key with Regedit?

TypeLib cannot be opened. An error is preventing this key from being opened. Details: Access is denied.
Any suggestions?
Thanks again. | |

| The Windows Installer may not run in Safe Mode.
However I was under the impression that you could not modify the permissions on the following registry key using regedit:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Class\Interface\(46B89F5A-769D-4792-AD9A-E3755915CB3}\TypeLib
Do you get an "access denied" error trying to modify the permissions at that key?
If so, does the same error occur in Safe Mode?

On my system I have HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes

I just tried to start the Windows Installer Service in Safe Mode and got a 1084 error. Also tried to uninstall Adobe Reader 9.1 and couldn't because Windows Installer wasn't running.

Edit: I just rebooted and cofirmed that Windows Installer is always disabled in Safe Mode.

| Re: [Vista] Unable to Install, or Uninstall, Adobe Reader Before opening regedit.exe, can you right-click regedit.exe and select "Run as administrator".
Also, to rule out a problem with your user account, can you try another user account with administrator privileges (create one if necessary) and see if the same problems exist.

| Re: [Vista] Unable to Install, or Uninstall, Adobe Reader said by bangaroo :You might try RegSeeker. RegSeeker has a registry editor "Find in Registry" that allows you to delete keys. Maybe RegSeeker can bypass the premissions problem. » www.softpedia.com/progDownload/R···229.html Assuming I could delete that particular key, would that solve the problem of installing/uninstalling? I'm leary that getting rid of the key would leave me with a worse mess, with perhaps Adobe Reader 9.0 not working at all.
Also, I tried running RegEdit as Administrator and could still not open the key ... same error.

Also, I tried running RegEdit as Administrator and could still not open the key ... same error. What I am guessing is that the uninstaller is hanging on this registry key, and there are probably more invalid keys after this one. After you delete this key, the next invalid key will stop the uninstaller. You will have to keep deleting each invalid key until they are all deleted. Then the uninstaller will be able to finish the uninstall.
To be safe, first export the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Class\Interface\(46B89F5A-769D-4792-AD9A-E3755915CB3}\TypeLib, or create a system restore point. If something goes terribly wrong, then reinstall the exported registry key, or revert back to the previous restore point.

At this point, I may wait for Windows 7 and perform a clean install.

1 edit | Re: [Vista] Unable to Install, or Uninstall, Adobe Reader If this were to happen to Me, at this point, I would: Back-Up all critical data (or do a Full image backup of the OS partition to DVDRs, or to another HD with Acronis, or GHOST). Perform a "Repair Install" of Vista. See if that fixes the issue.
If not, (or if the Repair install should go badly), then I'd restore the OS partition from backup, or just do a Total Reinstall of Windows.

For some reason, I'm unable to find the key using RegSeeker.
Edit: OK, found the key, and RegSeeker was unable to delete it either.
