| Re: [Info] Windows 7 Upgrade FAQ The question that I ask is what are we to do when the Beta and RC starts shutting down every two hours?
MS says to format and install a legit Windows OS. They expect everyone to install a different version for what 3 months or so?
And please, I do not need a lecture on a image or running Win 7 in a VM. -- "You can observe a lot by watching". Yogi Berra

| Re: [Info] Windows 7 Upgrade FAQ I went into it with eyes fully open. I had thought that there might be another build or an extension to the shutdown time.
It just doesn't seem logical to pull the plug way before the final OS is released. -- "You can observe a lot by watching". Yogi Berra

I thought the beta expires soon, but the rc one doesn't start rebooting until next year. If your running the rc, you should be fine without any reboots until a while after windows 7 is out. Yes. It's too early to worry about something especially if its 12 months away.

I would image your OEM will ship you a disk, or perhaps provide a download (Dell has a download center that allows limited redownloads of your licensed software) and a product key somehow. I imagine they could even offer some type of certificate via Microsoft.
Does anyone know for sure?

| I have Windows Vista Ultimate on my Home PC...
now what i'm reading is that in order to go to Windows 7 .. i have to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate.
If i wanted to go to Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Professional, i have to do a fresh install.
Does this mean i have to wipe out my HDD to go to 7 Prem or Prof?
Thanks! | |

Yes, you'll need to re-install all of your programs. I'm in the same boat. (Vista Ultimate to Home Premium). I may just end up dual-booting until I get all my stuff re-installed and work out any unforseen bugs in the new OS.

Yep.....same boat here too (V Ultimate to 7 Home Premium), and I'll probably deal with it the same way.

June 30, 2009 4:00 AM PDT FAQ: Making sense of the Windows 7 upgrade options
While it's true that Windows 7 doesn't arrive on retail shelves and new PCs until October, Microsoft has announced two programs designed to give a head start those that know they want the new operating system.
The Windows Upgrade Option, which runs through early next year, allows those who buy a new Vista PC to get a free copy of Windows 7 after it hits shelves in October. The other program which runs only through July 11, allows Windows XP and Vista users to pre-order a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium for $49 or Windows 7 Professional for $99.
In the following question and answer document, CNET News' Ina Fried walks you through both programs. ...
• Who qualifies for the pre-order program? ... • Can I buy one of the upgrades if I am running Windows Vista Ultimate? ... • Will I get both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the operating system? ... • How does the Windows 7 Upgrade Option program work? ... • Is it really free? ... • Do all Vista PCs qualify? ... • What about Netbooks? ... • Is there a limit to how many computers qualify for the update program? ... • What about those who bought Vista PC before June 26? ... • Update: Among the questions I was asked most frequently was whether someone could move from a version of Windows XP or Vista to a different version of Windows 7. In all combinations, the answer is yes, and it can be done using the cheaper upgrade version of the operating system, though in some cases a clean installation of Windows 7 may be required...

| According to the CNET article referenced by Kabanos:
"All those who are running Windows XP or Windows Vista on their system, and whose PC is capable of running Windows 7, can upgrade that machine to Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Professional using the Windows pre-order program"
Does that include Vista Basic ?
