kudos:4 | Amplifier on Cable Modem Line I know that amps on a cable modem line are discouraged. But, my question is, what problems will a person notice if they do that?
In my case, I bought five Verizon MI424 routers and have used them as MoCA devices. It works very well. But, I've had to split lines quite a bit. As a result, my cable modem numbers were right on the edge of acceptable. These were the numbers:
Downstream
Freq/Power: 627.000 MHz -15 dBmV
Signal to Noise Ratio: 36 dB
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Upstream
Freq/Power: 37.500 MHz 48 dBmV
Now after adding the amp I get:
Downstream
Freq/Power: 627.000 MHz -1 dBmV
Signal to Noise Ratio: 33 dB
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Upstream
Freq/Power: 37.500 MHz 50 dBmV
Those numbers seem okay to me. And, I haven't experienced any problems and the speedtests seem to give me my normal speeds.

Ok just checking because I could not for the life of me understand why you could not use a basic amp to help out with loss. |

kudos:4 | Yeah, the amp seems to be working fine. Because MoCA can't work through most cable type amps, I had to put it in right were the line splits to go to the modem. Obviously, when you do that, you end up amplifying the noise as well. For me, it resulted in a 3dB loss in SNR. But, I don't think that hurt me too bad. |
