| [Other] New gigabit switch, minor problem ...
Yesterday I got 6 Intel gigabit Pro 1000 GT NIC cards and installed 5 of them into our family PC's (there is one to go, it will be done in a short while).
This morning, I set replaced my old Trendnet fast ethernet POE managed switch for a D-Link DGS-1024D. This took my network from a managed 10/100 switch with 8 POE (16 total) ports to a gigabit switch with a total of 24 ports, but no POE. I didn't use POE, at one time I thought I may, but it never worked out.
When setting up my new switch, I mapped my old ports 1-1 to the new switch (not that it matters much). The last port was the connection to the switch next to the router (the router has a gigabit switch next to it, connected to that switch are 2 gigabit NAS devices, the router, a netcam, and a DVR).
The cable connecting the new 24 port gigabit switch to the older (about a week older) 8 port gigabit switch didn't work. It didn't light up on the 24 bit switch and showed disconnected on the 8 bit switch.
Fortunately I had made two Cat5e (which all my ethernet cable is) runs between the large switch closet and my home office (where the small gigabit switch, router and cable modem are). The second run worked fine, and is currently providing gigabit service for our home.
My question, if anyone has a suggestion, is what is wrong with the old run? Why doesn't it show connected to either switch? Why did it work at 10 / 100, but seems dead with gigabit? Shouldn't it fall back if there is a problem to just fast ethernet? -- "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use." |

Have seen gigabit fail to negoatiate down on bad cables. Seem it just gets confused. |

| Thanks for the information. I am a bit surprised it didn't fall back to fast ethernet (which worked). As my new gigabit switch is unmanaged, I can't do anything about it.
Should I resplice the RJ45 ends of the failing cable? All my other Cat5e runs (so far) have worked at gigabit speed. -- "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use." |

You could try forcing the NIC to 100Mbps Full-Duplex while you decide what to do about the cable. |

Though I could attach a NIC to it and try to see if there is any software to diagnose the cable. I wonder if the Intel Pro 1000 GT software can diagnose a gigabit ethernet problem?
Fortunately I ran 2 lines between my home office (where the router, cable modem and small gigabit switch are) and the router closet (where the large 24 port gigabit switch is).
I recently added the 8 port gigabit switch to provide gigabit service to my 2 Linkstation NAS devices. Prior to that the 4 port fast ethernet router was sufficient. -- "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use." |
