| reply to CanerisErik Re: Caneris Speed Test Server - open to the public
I think I may have just fixed it. Is everything working now?
It appears to have been an anti-DOS setting, limiting the rate of new TCP connections and the burst, but only from outside our network, which explains all the symptoms exactly. Not sure why it was triggered if there was no actual DoS...it's off for now, but I won't tell you the values
It will get tested and re-enabled later on, so don't try anything -- Erik - Caneris - Internet solutions and more. |

| reply to Guspaz said by Guspaz :DSLR's iPhone speed test measures both upstream, downstream, and latency. And since the iPhone supports neither Java nor Flash, presumably it uses AJAX. No point re-inventing the wheel. Thanks. I wasn't aware that they had one. I will see if they will let us use this version.
If not, we'll just continue to develop our own AJAX-based one...what I linked to before was a very preliminary version which I hacked together quickly and which didn't automate most of the steps yet. -- Erik - Caneris - Internet solutions and more. |

| reply to CanerisErik Minimalist Speed Measurement: 4 files, that's all.
I'll rephrase the essence of my message to minimize possible misinterpretation:
I wish that good ISPs would make available just 4 files of random data on a web server, for the benefit of those users who want to do their own minimalist raw speed testing, using modems, routers, etc., rather than complex hardware, software, and configurations, or other "advanced" resources, or resource-greedy features, which may not be available, or which may themselves be the cause of the "speed" problems that we seek to diagnose.
256k.dat 1024k.dat 4096k.dat 16384k.dat
[I doubt this is difficult, expensive, or risky.] That's all. Nothing more.
Quite possibly, absolutely no one else is interested in this. Please comment, critique, correct, improve, on any part of this. -- »[RFC] Connection / Speed Problems Checklist |

But I have already done exactly that in my new speed test above! If you look at the links I have there under Download Test, they are like this: »speed.caneris.com/new/dn.php?size=256 »speed.caneris.com/new/dn.php?size=512 »speed.caneris.com/new/dn.php?size=768
Try it out. It does exactly what you wanted. -- Erik - Caneris - Internet solutions and more. |

Thanks. (Seems that I was unable to URL the files before.) |

1 edit | Thanks. Have now remotely speed-measured several Tomato sites.
+ (Unfortunately none on Caneris Network. Looking forward to the day when the respective ISPs will offer 4 files to download: 256k 1024k 4096k 16384k.)
BTW, short-haul upload speed testing is not much of a problem, of course. |

| reply to CanerisErik I tried the new speed test, but it doesn't work on my iPhone; it requires that you manually download a file, and the iPhone doesn't support downloading (or possibly uploading? Didn't try that part, it might support uploading photos or videos) files. I think you need to do an XHR to measure downstream. |

I actually wasn't developing it to work on iPhone, but that's a good idea to make it compatible with it as well. I'll see if the data can be sent inside XHR both ways (and hence also helping to automate the entire process completely) but also leave the option of downloading files directly so that users such as planiwa who want just the "raw files" can measure it themselves. -- Erik - Caneris - Internet solutions and more. |
