1 edit | DC Metro NBC WHAG HD Ch. 515 Not sure if this is for the entire DC area but in Northern VA we now receive WHAG HD on channel 515. It's channel 25 out of Hagerstown MD. I don't think it shows anything different then what we're receiving on WRC except different local news. Probably a waste of space but there must be a demand for it somewhere.

This was in the guide as of last night in Silver Spring. I would think it would have to go out to the entire vho4 area.

BTW I'm in AA county and don't have it either.

WHAG doesn't have any sub channels like WRC does so it has the potential to have a better picture since it isn't bandwidth restricted like WRC is. WRC, WJLA, and WUSA neither of them look like they used to in the early 2000's when they weren't broadcasting the sub-channels.

| Re: DC Metro NBC WHAG HD Ch. 515 said by necochino :It is on in Fairfax, but I have yet to see any HD content in it... WHAG 25 is the NBC affiliate in Hagerstown, MD. It will have HD programming when NBC does. I have not seen any syndicated programming in HD on WHAG since their new digital broadcast signal on UHF 26 reached it's full alloted power of 575 kW a few days after June 12. WHAG's new digital broadcast signal is not hard to pick up in Sterling, VA if you aim a UHF antenna to the NW. WHAG is owned by Nexstar Broadcasting which has been cashed strapped for years, so it is not surprising that WHAG is not able to broadcast syndicated HD programming.
The Hagerstown market is a subset of Washington DC market. WHAG's new improved digital broadcast signal now reaches the western and northern parts of the DC metro area. Nexstar either was able to talk Verizon into adding the station to the Washington DC line-up, or maybe they invoked must carry rules. Since it is technically a DC market station, Verizon probably can't add it to the Anne Arundel / Howard county or Baltimore line-ups.
I was surprised to see WHAG 25 show up on 515 on Friday. Had figured the next HD local Verizon added in DC would be WPXW Ion 66 which went HD several months ago and moved to NW DC on June 12 by taking over WUSA-DT 9's pre-transition UHF 34 transmission.

| Re: DC Metro NBC WHAG HD Ch. 515 I was always confused by WHAG.
On one hand, it was in the news that WHAG was charging local cable systems for its signal, even though WRC 4 is available. »www.herald-mail.com/forums/lofiv···008.html
They got on Dish Network via must-carry, that is Dish is not paying for the channel.
But they are not on DirecTV, as maybe they opted for retansmission consent.
So, with Fios, is Fios carrying them free?

WRC: 12Mbps ABR WHAG: 17Mbps ABR
WRC may user newer, more efficient encoders, although I would be surprised if they were able to deliver comparable quality in 12Mbps. I haven't had time to compare the two.

| NBC? Goodness, I thought this was another local PBS station. This channel was available in my Moxi DVR before the latest round of Viacom HD channels were added to the Reston, VA area (VHO4). The guide data has been available since I remember seeing the channel show up, however, there is no channel label (typical Moxi issue for me), so all I had was the unfamiliar WHAG HD name to go by. If the standard definition mirror is listed in my guide, I'll be sure to remove it from my channel list to keep the duplicates down to a minimum. | |

It's just not being mapped by my Fios STBs -- only by my CableCard-using TiVos. If I had HD STBs, I suspect I wouldn't be getting 515 on them, either. -- 09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0
