In February, 2001, I signed up for Pacific Bell DSL Service: 1536/128 for $39,95 a month. Of course, SBC had already bought The Pacific Telesis Group by then; but we didn't see the "SBC" logo on the bills until a year later.
In December, 2005, SBC received final regulatory approval to buy AT&T; and the merger was initiated in January, 2006. SBC then put the AT&T logo on our bills. By then my DSL service was 1536/384, and $19.95 a month.
By August, 2006, we were getting 3008/512 for $17.95 a month; albeit, on a one year contract, when that plan was normally $24.95 a month.
Only after the AT&T purchase of Bellsouth in 2007 did I see a price hike. And that wasn't until Spring, 2008, when our then $25.00 a month service was raised to $30.00 a month.

There are many ways to get 20+ Mb/s DSL, including bonded ADSL2+ and VDSL. It doesn't always require fiber. |

The way it looks to me, based on the maps you see at the Centurytel/Embarq Merger site, lots of places that might link up well between Centurytel and Embarq infrastructure.
I speculate Lots of improvement in OR/WA areas. Also, Centurytel has a huge fiber operation in TX, so Embarq wins there too. And MO has many places where CTL and EQ companies should link up. So I really hope that the rural customers will benefit.
But, at least CTL made a big purchase into LTE/700 Mhz. And the map shows only a few EQ areas will benefit. |

Well the COO did show me a map of their plans to improve their core network - don't know how far down the tree that falls for rural customers but perhaps it does something? I live 2.4kft from my CO and i'm directly between a major embarq General Business Office and their data support center, so I haven't had trouble getting the max offered.. I would hate to be stuck on 768k or lower.. |

There is expected to be a region market based pricing structure to compete on a local basis, so prices you see now on either page are bound to chage and then be adapted to compete with what is available in your area. |

The merger is effective on July 1st. From their website and what employees have told me ...........
"Upon the closing of the acquisition of EMBARQ by CenturyTel, CenturyTel will be changing its name to CenturyLink.
CenturyLink will continue to provide communications and entertainment services to customers in its markets across 33 states under the CenturyTel and EMBARQ brands for the next several months. The company expects to launch the CenturyLink brand across most of its markets by year end 2009."
So Embarq is here until sometime towards the end of the year. Employees have told me the phones will still be answered Embarq, the trucks will still say Embarq and your bill will still say Embarq.
As I'm seeing it, it will be business as usual with small changes such as allowing naked DSL from the get-go instead of having to jump thru loops to get it. As time goes on and more systems between the two companies integrate so that everyone is on the same page then you'll see more changes happening. |

I also heard that if you renew your contract when it's up, you can retain the $39.95 pricing.
I'm hoping if CenturyLink moves to this new packaging+pricing structure, they kick up the upload to 896k on the 10 meg package, but leave the price alone. |

Folks, time for some error correction about Centurytel's High Speed Internet speeds:
The current top 'DSL' speed (aka - internet over a copper pair) will have an top possible speed of 10.0 Mbps.
The current top Fiber To The Premise (FTTP) connection is available upto 20.0 Mbps.
Here is the ultimate breakdown of residential speeds on each medium type... (sorry, this is missing prices)
Copper/DSL:
Extended 512 or 256 Kbps (dsl past 18,000 feet to ???)

I have heard that some copper locations are being experimented with getting 2.0 Mbps upload speeds. Of course, the combined company may want to change things up and make all of this information useless.

According to their website "Up to 20mbps". However, just because they are merging does not necessarily mean that you will see an immediate increase in speeds, etc. It does not change the fact that your speeds are limited to what the equipment in your area is capable of, your distance from the CO, etc. There may be improvements to the network to come out of this merger but that has not been announced. |
