Why the sudden delay for anonymous posters?

Several of my colleagues and I have noticed the sudden requirement that anonymous posters need to be manually filtered and our posts are often delayed for hours. Is this a plan to reduce the number of posters in the forums?

Due to various circumstances (our employers, not upsetting our paying customers by dispensing free assistance, etc.) we are not able to use our normal accounts for all postings. Why the obstacles to us offering our assistance?

i think it is a good and fair compromise between having to combat the abuse, spam and trolling, that anon postings bring and the treasured ability to post anon which in itself is fast disappearing in online communities

are you finding the delay to be a big problem? It might be an hour or so in the wee hours of the morning but during the day it should be very short..

Anonymous posts to news comments have been held-for-OK for a year or two at least.

You are lucky that this site even allows anonymous posters at all.

Either put up with the delay or dont post anonymously.

Simple.

Thanks mom. With that attitude you must not have a successful website of your own. If you don't like the subject go elsewhere as your not the concerned party posting without an account. Plain and simple.

No I dont. This site is very successful though and they seem to be doing ok with how they handle anons posting.

If it were up to me I wouldnt allow you guys to post at all. Now go clean your room and quit whining. It is annoying.

I posted message to two groups friday night. They did not show up until this morning. I would not call that short.

Re: Why the sudden delay for anonymous posters?

There weren't any posts that sat all weekend awaiting approval in any area moderators could see. I know because I checked many times during the weekend. The longest I saw any post wait was 2 hours and 40 minutes, which was this morning when I logged on early and I guess no mods were around prior to that to approve it.

Perhaps the posts were made and the system lost them somehow, in a place they weren't visible to anyone to approve. Perhaps there's another explanation.

Were they forum posts? News submissions? Feedback submissions? I'd like to track this down.

Re: Why the sudden delay for anonymous posters?

FWIW- I tried to post in the Midwest forum yesterday and my post went to hyperspace, somewhere, but it never got to the forum. I tried three times to post, with an attachment, and it just disappeared. I finally gave up and when I tried to post without the attachment everything seemed fine. BTW, the attachment uploaded and previewed just fine, but never appeared in the forum. My point is: there may be something going on and some postings are not making it to the intended forum. I've never experienced that same condition before... without getting some kind of error message. So... maybe, there's something weird going on in the system. It was no big deal for me, so I didn't question it at the time, but it seems not to be an isolated incident so I offer my 2 cents now.

Pacy - try adding a dot or dash to your post body.

Preceding or trailing! Or, just anywhere? I did use a "dot" (period, at the end of the sentence)

My bad! Oops! Didn't mean to hijack this thread. Sorry 'bout that!

I've got another question. When you say they posts did not show up, do you mean that they do not update the thread in the listing on the forum page? Or that the posts did not appear at all in the thread itself? Thanks.

Yes. One was in the Networking forum. I do not recall which forum the other was in.

The latter. They did not appear in the topic to which they were posted.

Re: Why the sudden delay for anonymous posters?

You have stated reasons for wishing to remain anonymous and I don't wish to interfere with that by guessing which posts they are. If you don't mind, could you post a link to the one in the Networking forum? I could at least see the timestamp on it. I don't know that it will shed any light on the situation or not, but if the post isn't becoming visible when we think it is then something's amiss. If you don't wish to identify the post, that's certainly up to you.

BTW, your post to which I'm replying was approved after 1 minute being held (from what I can see) and I'm replying to it a couple minutes after it became visible. It's timestamped 2009-06-30 19:23:24

Is this happening in a particular forum? Is it happening at a particular time of day or night?

I check frequently during the day to see that anon posts aren't sitting for very long. I've seen very few delayed over 10 minutes. At night I don't check, so the times may be longer due to fewer mods being online.

Re: Why the sudden delay for anonymous posters?

It'll be easier and better if we just stick to the reported problem than if we get into back-and-forth arguments about anon posting. We're going to allow anon posting. It has just been delayed to let us keep up with increasing spam. If there are problems with the delay that aren't known to us, we need to know them.

Re: Why the sudden delay for anonymous posters?

Based only on empirical observation, it has appeared to be taking longer lately; at least, in the past week or so that "moderator at work" message has been place-holding longer than I remember.

(I've been coming here since 2000--read mostly, posted some; didn't join for years--no particular reason why not, just no reason to... till I finally did--it just makes some things easier.

Anonymous posters... more power to 'em. They're no worse than some other posters who are members--except for those spam-bots.)
