Telus Aircard Sierra Wireless 597E problem

Posting here to see if I can get any help - weekend Telus support was not useful.

I have a Sierra Aircard 597E that I use up in the cottage/woods on weekends. Gets lite use. Worked fine for the past year.

This weekend, I can only descibe the speed as "near dialup" - plus lots of time outs, and random garbled screens when I try to render most pages that are non text. If I tracert to Google.com it's sometimes gives a *, and if I tracert to the Telus IP, it always times out.

I have two laptops here, one is getting a bit of a faster connection with Chrome, but neither is able to run a speed test, and just based up normal page loads, and watching the packets download on my wireless watcher, must be going about 20 kps.

I'm in Ontario, where there is only 1 local highspeed EvDO tower -- could there be an issue there?

I've used the card in two machines, with basicall the same results (I typically have it in a Cradlepoint router).

Any thoughts, help, ideas? Without internet, I'm dying!

Thanks - Scott

What's the connection manager you're using?

Re: Telus Aircard Sierra Wireless 597E problem

Well, I haven't changed that in the past year..

But, either I am using the "EVDO Watcher" if the Aircard is directly plugged into the laptop directly, or I am using the built-in software for the Cradlepoint MBR 1000. Which I have used for the past month without issue until now.

Even just trying to load the DSLreport page, sometimes, I have to reload 2-3x just to get some of the text to appear - and these symptoms are here, with or without the router.

Thanks again everyone,
scott

Re: Telus Aircard Sierra Wireless 597E problem

If nothing has changed except for the speed, then it is a coverage issue. Telus need to open a ticket with their network people.

Exactly! Drove 30 minutes away, and onto a new tower, and all was working perfectly. I heard that Telus "is slow" to fix such issues. Any suggestion on who to call, and what to say to get this fixed soon?

Thanks - Scott

Re: Telus Aircard Sierra Wireless 597E problem

To be fair, I work for Bell Mobility, so I don't know who at Telus to contact for escalation. They must have a data troubleshooting department, and you would call them to open a ticket.

Re: Telus Aircard Sierra Wireless 597E problem

Hey Shaner and others - so, I've been told this is a Bell Mobility tower that I'm using not Telus. I could really use some help -I'm stuck between Telus Support and Bell.

I'm dealing with 2410ms tracerts and 25-100% packet loss on pings with the Crosby, Ontario tower. I've got a -80dmb signal and it's been like this for 3 weeks now!!

Telus said that Bell support said "they reset the datacard" but nothing has changed. Most of the neighbours are using Blackberry's and don't notice the issues with email. But, I'm pulling down 20-50kps when 3 weeks back I had 1.3 MPS!!

Thanks in advance,

Scott

Have you updated your aircard recently? There is a function in the options section to activate "Automatically". This will update your PRL roaming list which can have adverse problems with speed. If that doesn't solve the issue, contact TELUS Mobility and ask for a DNA Technical rep.

Re: Telus Aircard Sierra Wireless 597E problem

The weekend support person did have be automatically setup to update the roaming list... but that was after it was already slow.

I'll call today to let them know.

Thanks!

I'm just outside Cobden, Ontario and am experiencing the same issue.

Same configuration, using an MBR-1000 with a Sierra Wireless 598. Noticing sometimes it drops to "1X" coverage. Other times it's just painfully slow.

Anyone know if the PRL # listed below is current, or if I can force an upgrade from the MBR ?

Re: Telus Aircard Sierra Wireless 597E problem

What I had to go through to get this resolved (which was as slow & painful as the connection) - was to first file a ticket with Telus, they'll have you do all the standard tests (pathping being the gold standard), then determine whose tower you are having issues with... then, it just takes time to resolve. In my case, 3 weeks.

8087 is the latest PRL for Telus, so if everything worked fine recently, it's a tower issue. To isolate, just drive with your card/laptop to another tower location and see if everything works fine.

Re: Telus Aircard Sierra Wireless 597E problem

They mentioned that I could turn on the 'NIC' option in the watcher (which I'm not using, being on an MBR1000 router). Apparently this is off by default, but offers a slightly stronger radio power (or better signal rate)?

Anyone have any idea what the AT command would be for this ?
