speedtest.net

I noticed that during a test run I see on my status bar that data is being sent to »speedgauge.optonline.net/.

I guess they are gathering stats on dl/ul speeds.

Thats where the speed test is being hosted from.. Thats why picking the NY server for speedtest.net gets OOL users good results, because its hosted by OOL

I used to be able to go to that url directly to do my speed tests instead of speedtest.net until they required a username and password now.

Thanks for the info. It's funny that when I had the field ops supervisor over my house I asked if they knew what peoples download/upload speeds were. At first he said no, then he said that there was a way but didn't elaborate. Perhaps speedtest.net is the way.

When I called in, I used a different speed test site. The tech on the phone was able to see my speed from speakeasy as well.

It's likely that they use some network management solution to monitor bandwidth associated with different IP addresses.
