Municipal tap water is plenty clean!

I do not know where you live but my water smells like chlorine from the other rooms while tap is running.
My water is brown sometimes but usually always yellow.
I get the quarterly water reports and there are a lot more in the city water then minerals. I also do believe the reports, but, thats me.

The filters in fridges and britta's and pur filtered pitchers are charcol filters and generally only remove some minerals and some chlorine.
reverse osmosis is the best bet for store bought units that go under the sink but generally do not stop all mineral and all chlorine but no other stuff like arsenic and parasites.
Best bet is whole house filtration and a reverse osmosis and the (forgot name) UV light that kills all bacteria.

My dogs get britta pitcher water cause if they use tap water they get urine infections within one day and blood in urine. That was my cue to never ever put that crap in my body ever!

We do strictly bottle water here....even for large pot of pastas,soup and other cooking.

I installed a GE Under sink unit. The cartridges last 6 months (or more). And they're reasonably priced. Depending on the level of filtration you want you can get the unit for under $100.

You're not going to OD on calcium by drinking tap water. Hard water is not harmful. In fact, some studies have shown it to be slightly beneficial to your health.

If you are that paranoid about your drinking water, call a local bottled water supplier(411 on the phone can help you) and have them bring you 5 gallon bottles of distilled water, there is NOTHING in it beside water, they will even rent you a cooler.

About the only heavy metal that is bad for you in moderate levels is lead, high levels of calcium(much higher than you are going to get in your water) will not hurt you either, but may contribute to stones.

On the scale you posted, it doesn't say what low or high means as far as a number, just relative to other systems in their test.

If you take vitamins, take a look at what is in it.

My point exactly. I'm not implying this applies in your case, but "credentials" and "certifications" only matter when there's actual experience and training behind them.

Your city may have the cleanest water in the world, and you can read a water quality report, but all the credentials in Santa Rosa, or the whole state of California for that matter, won't help the Milwaukee municipal water system.

I think it depends on where you live, here the tap water doesn't taste that good to me. So I buy Dasani or Aqafina bottled water as it tastes better and when its on sale you can get a case for $4. I thought about home delivery of water but like grabbing a few bottles if I need to when I go out.

My filters last about 3 months before the water flow slows down. Even then, I get another 1-2 months out of it, just takes a little bit longer to get the volume of water needed. During the winter, I drink 1-3 pots of Tea/day, wife uses it to fill the baby's bottles for his formula every day, everyone uses it to drink, and wash our veggies in. Even when the filter is nearly done for with just a trickle of water, it's still noticeable better then straight from the tap. Milwaukee Water is horrible. I wouldn't drink un-filtered here, especially after every rain storm, the sewage district dumps millions of gallons of raw sewage into Lake Michigan right where our tap water comes from.

I live in the City of Houston and I drink the water straight out of the tap all the time. I tried the PUR filter you use and just didn't like the hassle and I found the water tastes the same as straight from the tap. Yes, and I do have the credentials to back that up.

Your municipal water is well within EPA standards for adults.

Those bar graphs don't mean anything to me, as I look at laboratory data (with real numbers even) on all these chemicals/contaminants every day and know the MCL for each.

I don't think you're a baby, so the high nitrates aren't a real factor. Adults can't get Blue Baby Syndrome.

A lot of places take water from the same public supply as you get, and just filter the hell out of it.

You specifically want to know the filtration process used and resultant mineral content (and whether it's natural or added back in). Too often filtered public supply water has almost no mineral content left, which makes it less healthful than what comes out of your tap.

If it's spring water, do some research on the spring and make sure it's far removed from any type of agricultural or operation that disturbs the surface or could run-off into the aquifer.

The filters lasted about 3 months and were $25 to replace. Unit cost like $60. It worked well.

The Pur faucet filter works quite well. They switch our chemicals once a year for 6 weeks from chloramine to chlorine to flush the system. Zero odor or taste in the filtered stuff, compared to it being worse than an over-chlorinated swimming pool from the unfiltered taps.
