Re: Road Runner - Docsis 3 news?

Faster speeds would be nice, but consistent speeds and better latency would suit me fine.

Shows 100MBPS now. Someone else pointed this out after this forum was created then it made top story here.

Looks like Docsis 3.0 is on track for this year for NYC and this just happened to be the first sign of it.

Heard today from a very reliable inside source, no DOCSIS 3 for the Charlotte area anytime soon. Budget problems.

The Charlotte area has some major issues, at least where my CEO is. We had to have a DSL line installed as his Biz Class line is too unreliable and suffering too much packet loss to support a measly VoIP connection. After fussing and getting them to admit it's a problem at the headend that is going to take months to fix, we couldn't wait any longer.

That is unfortunate. Not sure how the Charlotte area is but for NYC it is definitely a go.

Competition is intense here. Budget problems are just an excuse.

NYC will be the only DOCSIS 3.0 launch in the country this year. Which is lame, by any standard, but the suits at TWC argue the speeds aren't necessary. In reality, they face crap last-gen DSL competition in the majority of their markets -- so it's not that consumers don't want the speed -- it's that they really don't need to deploy it until 2010 or 2011 -- if even then.

A source at Cisco says DOCSIS 3.0 gear has been in NYC for months for testing...since before Sprint even. Another new source at Time Warner Cable who reached out this week insists the NYC launch will be in weeks, not months. No confirmation of this last bit though...

FIOS had permits in my town then new sewer work permits came in. Unclear what is going on.

Is TWC gonna use new modems when Docsis 3 is deployed? What Modem is TWC providing now in NYC?

the reason NYC is getting Docsis 3 TWC has competition in this market, Verizon Fios and DSL, RCN other smaller provider, hot spots almost everywhere for the netbook
notebook crowd

the modems depend on your service level. we have Digital Phone and 10/512 road runner and we have the Arris tm402p

You would have to. Our current modems are only DOCSIS 2.

I don't think Time Warner has anything to worry about with RCN and neither does Verizon FIOS.

The competion is Verizon FIOS vs Time Warner for all practical purposes and competition in New York City.

Only new models required will be for those customers who need to phase out older Docsis modems.

Docsis 3.0 modems will only be required for Docsis 3.0 tier customers.

Anyone knows if docsis 3 will be more reliable what I'm talking about it is (1-3 meg during the whole day) ocassionaly 5-10 meg for like 2-3 minutes

by bonding channels? would the speed be reliable like fios?

@rr.com

Yes and no, patt2k.

DOCSIS 3 would give you access to a larger "pool" of shared bandwidth with your neighbors on the same node, but it's still shared.

If TW kept the current speeds they offered in place, then DOCSIS 3 would easily free up the capacity needed to feed all the users. But DOCSIS 3 is going to be more of a Premium service, thus it will cost more and in order to be appealing will be significantly faster as well. Service speeds of 50-100Mbps will mean that just a few users could essentially saturate the node if they used their service to its fullest extent. So for an example, users on the node would still experience fast speeds, but below their (say 50Mbps) maximum. Then you will have people complaining that their 50-100Mbps connections are slowing down to 25Mbps at night.

you would have to have a few people on the node transferring some massive files in order for that to happen however. It's likely TW would throttle users who abuse their connections to such an extent in order to provide consistent speed for all users on the network.

DOCSIS 3 is important to cable companies that need to compete with FIOS, but all it's really doing is buying the cable companies some time. FIOS is still superior.

Thanks RR User. I mean for me 20 Meg Download At least 10 Meg upload is perfect For anything. So Just let's hope TWC can maintain 20 Meg download and give a better upload right know I am considereing to swich to 3 Meg dsl dry loop line because RR at night can';t handle even 3 megs goes to down to as low as 500-600 Kbps. It's a huge pain

Its interesting how Verizon FIOS is a no show here.

I thought we would have FIOS vs Docsis 3.0 by December in NYC but so far it doesn't look like the case.

Its pretty dead and bleak out there right now.

I remember when firms were rolling out fiber like it was no tomorrow. I used to see trucks like mad putting fiber in the streets all over for their firms in the NYC Metro area.

Times have changed now. I wouldn't be surprised if Docsis 3.0 was cancelled for NYC and FIOS was suspended. I just really wouldn't.

Which means Docsis 3.0 could very well be a no show for Time Warner. Doesn't matter either way. I could be wrong. But if it does come, how many people will pony up for it?

NYC is a HUGE market, FH.

Verizon can't wire the whole city in a year, nor can they in a few years. It will take them years to expand their footprint in that area.

DOCSIS 3 is easier to deploy, since it is mainly a headend upgrade. It's very apparent though because of the density of NYC, that TWC has a lot of node congestion. DOCSIS 3 will ease that, however I'm unsure if any additional node splitting would be required.

I could be wrong, but I believe I did read somewhere on here once that deploying broadband in NYC is considerably more expensive and time consuming for Verizon, than say upgrading your average suburban town.

No, I think you fail to realize the extent of the economic crisis we are in right now.

Firms like Verizon are not hiring anymore workers. In fact most firms have instituted hiring freezes at a minimum and are laying off workers.

Ivan Seidenberg with Charlie Rose specifically said point blank revenue margins were flat and they weren't hiring.

In fact the odds are in my honest opinion that Verizon will stop deployment of FIOS altogether because it costs way too much to deploy considering the nature of the economy we are in right now.

Docsis 3.0 is not as easy as you think to deploy and the fact is most customers will not be spending the extra for the service.

I think its more than doubtful that Verizon will meet its 2014 obligation for FIOS. However if they prove me wrong so be it but it will take a huge economy recovery during this time.
