Comcast in my area will be moving 41 analogs to digital in the next two months...granted, for them that means a possible 123 HD channels with that awful 3:1 QAM ratio they use.... ;) ;)

Hopefully that rumor of a "nice chunk of new HD's" in Q4 comes true for us...

No, this is wrong. Assuming that HD Theater shoots most of its footage on digital video rather than film, it's maximum resolution is 1080p. Anything that TCM airs that was shot on 32 mm film has much, much higher potential resolution.

Now, it's been stated at AVS that TCM will be upconverting for the next year, so that might cut against adding it in the short term. But given how these carriage agreements generally work, adding TCM, HLN, TruTV, and Cartoon Network would seem well worth the effort. These are four channels that, until recently, were standard fare for analog distribution by cable providers. The next ones Verizon should go after are BBC, MSNBC, Comcast's, TCM, and Cartoon Network. The Cablevision/Rainbow networks should be added, but we all know the story there.

I'm not so sure of this. It all depends on the quality of the transfer. The point I was trying to make is that if Cablevision (a company that until very recently has had a history of only adding new channels to their lineup slowly) can add new premium HD channels as they become available, Verizon should be able to as well.

Hopefully Verizon adds a half dozen more HD channels this fall. At some point though, the number of channels nor internet speed are not going to make a competitive difference, and the providers will have to sell based on other measures. Verizon said recently that they are no longer going to compete on price, well, umm, that might make its way back into the equation. And price wars, of course, are usually very ugly.

If I were Verizon, I would really be focusing on getting more of the Web into the TV/STB. That means web-video sites like You Tube, Hulu, Fancast and AOL, and not the worthless sites I've read they are going to offer.
