[ TV] I'm thinking about leave Videotron to go with Bell

Hi,

first of all, i'm Rambytes (aka Jean-Francois) and i'm with Videotron from a long time ago, and now I have all my communication service with Videotron (the phone, internet and television).

My question today is about the television (because i'm fine with the internet and the phone line).

I'm not familiar with the Bell service and for what I have here, I don't know if it's more better to the other side

So, right now, i have 2 "normal" terminal and one rent HD PVR (so a total of 3 terminal) . I have the possibility to choose the channel I want (i've 20 custom channel) and I have Super Ecran (movie network but in french), and this is my channel: Fox44, Pix, ShowCase, VrakTV, LCN, Musique+, Canal D, RDS, Teletoon FR, Canal Vie, Teletoon En, Show Case Action, Show Case Diva, MTime, CinePop, Serie+, ZTele, Canal Mystere, Prise 2, Les Idées de ma maison. I have more channel from the "startup" kit, like TVA, TQS, etc...

And for the HD, i don't know about Bell, but Videotron offer for free the HD channel if you have the SD one. Example: I have RDS in SD, so I can have the RDS-HD for free. Same thing for SRC, TQS, VrakTV, Serie+, etc.

And now the price... Only for my Tv, it's arround 78$ per month (rent PVR include), only missing the taxe.

So, does I will get a better price for a better service? I'm asking that because Videotron and her PVR (Scientific Atlanta PVR8300) is not good enough. Too many bug... the last one whe have is whe cannot, after a random period of time on the same channel, rewind, pause or record. the PVR is suppose to do that, and the rewind and pause fonction is the one that whe use the more often... and now, whe cannot. Arround the videotron forum, some people tell that it will not be patch until the end of the summer.

I'm just tired about the problem that the PVR give me. But if it's not better in Bell, I will keep my PVR from Videotron. But on the other side, if the TV service in Bell is better from Videotron, I will change for sure.

So, what advice or warning you can give me... and give me the more information.

Thanks alot!

First off, thanks for giving us your name. I think I know you. There aren't many Jean-Francois in Quebec.

Now, to be frank, leaving Videotron for Bell is leaving bad for worse. So don't bother.

bell TV is much better
more HD channels ( you ll have hd channel for free if you have them on SD ) the HDPVr have no bug such the ENP HD , the rent is 20$ month , quality is also bettre for both SD and HD , according to your favourites channel , i ll invite you to go to bell.ca amd choose your theme packs ( with bell theres no a la carte for all the channels )
the price : basic in french : 29 (including digital access fees ) 5 theme packs :23 $ , super ecran 11$ , 2 basic receivers 3$ each
total before taxe : 29+23+11+20+3+3=89$
promotion :10$ discount for 24 months , complete installation for free
now if u add any other service ( mobilité,phone or internet ) you ll get 10$ dollar discout monthly as long as u have the bundle .
TOTAL after rebate :69$

you forgot the other thing you will need, patience...i dealt with several billing issues with Bell TV service when i had it...numerous errors that i had to call in every month to get fixed...one took 6 months to fix, one took 8 months to fix...i also had an issue where my bundle discount "fell off" somehow (not sure why or how) and that went on for almost a year...keep in mind, when all this was going on, i worked for Bell...to give you an idea about Bell, several of my staff used Rogers for their services, and honestly, i never blamed them...they were fed up with them too (even though we all worked for Bell).

i am not familiar with Videotron, but from what i always heard about them, they were pretty competitive...perhaps you have a faulty PVR and need it replaced?...i have the 8300 as well (two of them) and don't have any issues.

Bell TV has more English HD and less French HD (only Vidéotron has TeleQuébec HD, RDI HD, Artv HD, Evasion HD and Vox HD).

Salut Jean-François,

I did the opposite recently (move from Bell to Vidéotron), because there is no true "pick 20" with Bell. So to get all the channels you listed, you will need at least 6 theme packs : 31 $.
Also, you cannot pick & pay Moviepix, you MUST take the TMN bundle to get it (19 $). So you are looking at least at a $100 bill if you want to get at least the channels you listed.

yea, but according to Bell's ads, they say they do, so it must be true, isn't it?

They also say they have the "most HD", even though their competitors have English and French channels that Bell doesn't carry. But since they say that they have "the most", I must be wrong

But i don't look for a provider that have the "most" hd channel... I really don't care how much Bell or Videotron have or not the most Hd channel. What I want, is the channel I want, that's it.

But if i read all your post, I think the better choice is to keep Videotron. Reason: the price... 80$ is a little bit too much for me, so imagine 100$!!! And I don't want to transfert my phone or my internet with Bell... so i will not have any kind of rebate.

But continue to discuss... maybe I can change my mind!

Okay... I have a little bit more answer... i've call and this is what i can have:

The base + 4 packages (to have the channel I want) ans Super Ecran, for 55$/month but with a 24 month contract, I have a rebate of 10$ per month... so 45$/m

For the PVRHD(15$) + standard receiver (3$) it's 18$/month

Total: 63$/month, but with a 2 years contract!!! What the..... Videotron have a 1 year contract but I will not sign for a 2 yrs...

And there is NO guarantee of the signal... the guy tell me that when the tech will come to install the dish, he will look for the signal:

- 95% and up, no question ask, the signal is VERY good.

- Between 95% and 85%, he need my approval and there is no guarantee of the signal for that. So if I lost the signal too often, Bell will not be responsible for that.

- 85% and below, no installation.

But imagine this: I got a 89%, and I accept the installation, and I lost the signal few time per day... i'm stuck with that for 2 years!!!

Is it too risky?

all I say

@videotron.ca
Avoid long term contracts with high termination fee's.

just stay where you are...if you are having issues with the receiver, call videotron...as i said, my 8300's work fine...if your package is too high, see what they can do for you...maybe let them know what you can get with Bell, but to be honest, Bell isn't any cheaper...there is something you haven't been told or are missing.

Well From Nimiq 4 at 82 (HD and ethnic channels) you should get at the lowest 95% since the satellite is brand new but for the 91 (Standard Definition Channel) you should get 82% at the lowest due to Nimiq 1 being old and Nimiq 2 Malfunction the signal you can't expect to have a strong signal.

Also I lose my signal for around 5 minute per year.

dunno

A little bit ago in the videotron forum, people who were calling in and stating they couldn't afford the costs were being cut a break.

So no harm done calling up and saying your wife or something lost her job and the price is a bit high. What can you do for me.

While on the topic of the defective equipment, say you expect a credit since its not working as advertised. You could also try the CCTS and/or the Quebec consumers union to see if they can help as well. Or tell them to give you one that actually works?

Some time ago, I switched all my services from Videotron to Bell. It was not a good decision. Most of what Bell offered were lies. I had to fight for many months, to finally subdue to about halfway to what they had initially offered. I was so fed up with them, I ended up breaking the contract TV and payed the $200 fine. Imagine!

Oh and Videotron has contracts for TV now? That's too bad, because that is one thing I liked when I was with them. I had no contract. Also, if you change just one service from Videotron to Bell, you will probably loose a 'multiple service rebate' you currently have with them (or it will be reduced).

I could suggest other, more drastic changes to your services, but if I were you, between VDL and Bell, I would stick with VDL.

Hi,

So, after some week, i've made my decision and I will keep Videotron as my tv service provider. In overall, it's not a very good decision to switch with Bell.

My decision was made from a overall (ex: billing problem from Bell, the quality of the signal, etc.) It's not because some people d'ont have signal problem that I will not have...

But thanks alot all of you for your advice...
