Re: Baby Cardinals

Come to think about it...I haven't seen a single bluejay around here. Plenty of starlings and other birds, but no bluejays.

Our neighborhood is a haven for sparrows, brown finches, goldfinches, chickadees, bluejays, cardinals, the odd crow, now and then, starlings, some kind of hawk (haven't been able to ID what species it is, yet) and the biggest, ugliest turkey vultures I've ever seen. There have been some bald eagles in the air above us occasionally, but not too often. There's a refuge at the north end of Mosquito Lake and the eagle population continues to grow each year. It's funny... thinking back... how many times I've seen the hawk family perched on the very top of the flagpole and baseball foul poles out back. They'll sit for what seems like hours and suddenly swoop down to pounce on the unwary field mouse or mole. I get a very clear view from my rear deck. It's fascinating to watch the hawks, eagle, and turkey vultures ride the thermals coming up from the ball fields in the back. They'll soar round and round 'til they're nearly out of sight above.

I was driving today - 3 blocks away from my house - and the sight of 18 bluejays sitting on overhead lines actually scared the s**t out of me ! Shades of Hitchcock's 'The Birds'
About 5 miles away from me - even in the city limits, albet not as 'corporated' as my city - wild turkeys (HUGE ones), have been seen wandering on the 'berm' of a street. Granted the area is bounded by woods...deer have been known to dart out at various times of the day and day...so those that normally drive on that street/road have learned to drive slower than the posted 'turkey/deer/duck/geese' signs that the Highways Dept has so thoughtfully posted years ago.
