| Did Rogers ask you guys to upgarde your modem before August Just received an email saying that I must take my modem to a Rogers center and exchange it for a new one or I won't have internet access. The deadline was August 7th.
Just wondering if anyone got this. I find it strange that Rogers is forcing its customers to go in and exchange the modem rather than have them come in and exchange it for us. We pay good money for Internet! Also wanted to confirm with other users here to make sure it's not spam mail. Thanks.
Here's the link of centers btw - »assets.rogershelp.com/emailimage···res.html

Just to clarify, the SB5100 series modems cannot be upgraded to DOCSIS 3.0... if you want DOCSIS 3.0 speeds, then you need a new modem. SB5100 cannot do channel bonding.
However, if you meant that once they go live to DOCSIS 3.0 on the CMTS side, then yes, older modems are backwards compatible with the new CMTS's.

That said, although the DOCSIS 1 modems are still compatible, they don't do so well even at Ex+ speeds.

1 edit | Re: Did Rogers ask you guys to upgarde your modem before August Yeah thats the max speed of those modems, Docsis 1.1 can hit 38mb Just checked them out.. they are showing a max of 15mb,but your friend must be on the Manitoba Border. not bad for BF Nowhere, and we city folks get slower speeds (probably for more money)

I haven't received any such email, but then I remembered that my "master" Rogers email account is an old numbered account back from Shaw days that I no longer use. A few attempts to get one of my other Rogers accounts made the master have failed, so I haven't done anything.
Based on this post and since I have an SB5100, I decided to check what was in it in case these were only being mailed to the master account. There was lots of Rogers advertisements... loads of notices of features being dropped... nothing about exchanging my modem... but there, from early June, is a lovely notice telling me that my Better Choice Bundle is being dropped.

@rogers.com | Re: Did Rogers ask you guys to upgarde your modem before August He probably has an Motorola SB5100. They are swaping those out since the firmware cannot be upgraded to support some upgrades they have done at the headend. Docsis 3 is still awhile away.

@rogers.com | Probably is the Motorola. I was asked to swap that out last summer - same message - swap it or no service. I got in return the WebSTAR DPC2100R2.

I can't believe it's a problem related to DOCSIS 2.0 modems.

| I like my 5100. It's been running strong for about 6 years. I've tried Toshibas and 2 different models of Webstars and all of them would randomly disconnect on my line. The technicians could not find any problems, but it would constantly happen. The 5100 was the only one to remain stable. | |

Exidor Premium join:2001-05-04 Brampton, ON | No notice here for my SB5100, but the OP has not yet stated the model of his "old" modem.
I purchased my modem over five years ago during the $20 off promotion and it has been running without problem ever since.

| I have my original 5100 from the first year Rogers offered the "buy instead of rent" program. I also picked up a second 5100 about a year ago on ebay to try cloning my modem. It's not hard and worked like a charm. I used my own MAC so no one get their panties in a knot. I wanted a second unit to take with me when I go to the cottage. I wonder if this is about the 5100 being vulnerable to cloning. If they're not rolling out DOCSIS 3, then what's the rush and why wouldn't everyone get an email with their monthly bill (if you opted for electronic billing/notification)? | |

| This isn't restricted to the old surfboards... I bought my own Linksys BEFCMU10, which is DOCSIS 2 modem, and I got the same message. I called Rogers and they gave me no reason, because they (Customer Serivce and Technical Support) saw no record of this e-mail, and were not aware of any upgrades/construction in my area which would require me to get a new modem.
Those rascals. | |

mlerner Premium join:2000-11-25 Nepean, ON | Apparently it's because the SB5100 modems (and possibly Linksys) do not support channel bonding which Rogers will be using for DOCSIS 3 deployments.
Right now it's an email notification but they will most likely send you a letter.

| Re: Did Rogers ask you guys to upgarde your modem before August It sounds like this could be the plan to introduce DOCSIS 3 and channel bonding in limited areas (probably where there's currently significant congestion). Otherwise it doesn't make sense unless they'd annouced specifically that they were rolling out new tiers. | |

Bell can no longer claim to have faster downloads than Rogers. Copper will no longer cut it. We're getting closer to fiber to the home, I think.

Actually you can bond multiple lines with DSL to act as a single connection, so it's not QUITE at the end of its life yet. However, if everyone did that, they'd have to massively expand the CO's to get enough wire running to everyone.

| But that's a strange way of introducing a new service isn't it? (channel bonding docsis 3). You send out SOME emails to SOME people, telling them to upgrade their modems. But. There's not a press release on the Rogers website trumpeting their speed increase (or intent to) and technological leap over their main competitor (Bell), while the bulk of their clientele are using SB5100's (who bought them) and would constitute a huge spending increase on those same customers without justifying the cost? It doesn't make sense. | |

It doesn't make sense. I'm willing to bet if the postal code prefix's are checked, they'll all be around Universities and Colleges. Still plenty of time to advertise I suspect. Or we could be looking at overloaded or nearly overloaded nodes that, instead of splitting, channel bonding could achieve that same result at less cost. That allows Rogers to deliver 25 Mps service for Extreme Plus using DOCSIS 2 or 3 for all customers. And For those who want 50 Mps and still have an SB5100, just need to acquire a DOCSIS 3 modem.

| The caps are a joke, lets double our speed but limit you to 125gb transfer.
I wonder how they are going to handle 3web? I'm not currently affected by the change(M1L) but I'm sure it's coming. -- It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses.

sbrook Premium,Mod join:2001-12-14 H0H 0H0 | Motorola is considered a better modem. As to getting a Motorola later, it depends on what's available. When DOCSIS 3 comes along, at the moment all they have to provide is the SMC wireless router modem.
