| reply to giggabotch Re: Did Rogers ask you guys to upgarde your modem before August
said by giggabotch :Well if this info is true then Extreme Plus beats the theoretical maximum of DSL by 1 Mps. So on paper. Rogers beats Bell. Bell can no longer claim to have faster downloads than Rogers. Copper will no longer cut it. We're getting closer to fiber to the home, I think. Actually you can bond multiple lines with DSL to act as a single connection, so it's not QUITE at the end of its life yet. However, if everyone did that, they'd have to massively expand the CO's to get enough wire running to everyone. |

| reply to crazlunatic make sure that if you choose to purchase your modem instead of trade the rental that you save all paperwork and receipts. We bought the Motorola SB5100 from CompuSmart and returned our old CyberSurfer thinking that they would remove the $3.00 modem rental fee. They didn't do that and cannot even confirm we returned our old modem. They cannot even determine if the modem we bought is not actually their modem so they will not remove the rental fee from our statement. The rep told us to go back to the store we purchased the modem from and, of course, CompuSmart no longer exists. |

| reply to crazlunatic It's quite possible years ago, it wasn't uncommon that if you pushed enough they would activate almost any modem especially if it was from Videotron since they have most of the same infrastructure and modems but now I think it's quite rare I haven't seen anyone recently have any success. |

| reply to elwoodblues Their policy is to authorize only modems that they have sold, either directly, or through Rogers dealers (which have gone through Rogers anyway). The SN and MACs of all these modems are in a Rogers database.
Rogers position is that other modems, even if they are models they use, may not be supportable due to custom firmware, out of date firmware etc. If they aren't models they use, then they won't be able to get firmware upgrades. |
|
mlerner Premium join:2000-11-25 Nepean, ON | reply to elwoodblues It's just their policy. Theoretically every DOCSIS modem should work fine but they don't want to support 3rd party modems. |

@rogers.com | reply to Sunchip I won mine on ebay for $2. Just did a quick search, and there's lots and lots around the $1-$10. I take it cable providers state side have already implemented Docsis 3. |

sbrook Premium,Mod join:2001-12-14 H0H 0H0 | reply to crazlunatic Motorola is considered a better modem. As to getting a Motorola later, it depends on what's available. When DOCSIS 3 comes along, at the moment all they have to provide is the SMC wireless router modem. |

@rogers.com | reply to crazlunatic I loved my surfboard modem before it went kaput; this Webstar I replaced it with has been nothing but trouble. Is the Motorola a better model and should I ask for it when I (eventually) go to do my exchange? |

But that's a strange way of introducing a new service isn't it? (channel bonding docsis 3). You send out SOME emails to SOME people, telling them to upgrade their modems. But. There's not a press release on the Rogers website trumpeting their speed increase (or intent to) and technological leap over their main competitor (Bell), while the bulk of their clientele are using SB5100's (who bought them) and would constitute a huge spending increase on those same customers without justifying the cost? It doesn't make sense. I'm willing to bet if the postal code prefix's are checked, they'll all be around Universities and Colleges. Still plenty of time to advertise I suspect. Or we could be looking at overloaded or nearly overloaded nodes that, instead of splitting, channel bonding could achieve that same result at less cost. That allows Rogers to deliver 25 Mps service for Extreme Plus using DOCSIS 2 or 3 for all customers. And For those who want 50 Mps and still have an SB5100, just need to acquire a DOCSIS 3 modem. |

| reply to crazlunatic The caps are a joke, lets double our speed but limit you to 125gb transfer.
I wonder how they are going to handle 3web? I'm not currently affected by the change(M1L) but I'm sure it's coming. -- It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses. |

| reply to mlerner It sounds like this could be the plan to introduce DOCSIS 3 and channel bonding in limited areas (probably where there's currently significant congestion). Otherwise it doesn't make sense unless they'd annouced specifically that they were rolling out new tiers. |
|
mlerner Premium join:2000-11-25 Nepean, ON | reply to crazlunatic Apparently it's because the SB5100 modems (and possibly Linksys) do not support channel bonding which Rogers will be using for DOCSIS 3 deployments.
Right now it's an email notification but they will most likely send you a letter. |
