[Update] Boxee: Public Alpha for Windows

If you're on Windows and have been waiting to try out Boxee but didn't have an Alpha testers invite, you can now try it out. You'll need to create an account and sign in before you can download it:

Boxee developers hope to keep the releases for all three platforms (Linux, OS X, and Windows) in synch with plans to go into beta this fall. There are a few gotchas (Netflix isn't quite working but is supposed to be SOON) -- but then again, it IS alpha

Overall, I like Boxee as the best way to get at my local content as well as for a one-stop Internet/streaming access point on my HTPC connected to my HDTV. I also use it sometimes on my desktops/laptops but it's really meant to be the only app running (ala Windows media and the like...)

Good deal, thanks darcilicious See Profile

Let's give a lil description for those unfamiliar

quote:
What is Boxee?
Boxee is a free, open-source software platform that integrates personal media with Internet media along with social networking. boxee’s social networking component allows users to share information about what they’re listening to or watching with other Boxee users or friends on social networks like twitter, facebook, etc.

Boxee is designed for your TV and use of a remote control. To get Boxee on your TV you’ll need to first connect your computer to the TV screen. You will most likely need an DVI/VGA to HDMI cable (but it depends on the specific input/output on your computer and TV).

Boxee is based on the Award winning open-source project XBMC, and also incorporates the XUL framework (which is the basis for the Mozilla browser).

Anybody know how to enable Netflix in the Windows version? Apparently according to this post »forum.boxee.tv/showpost.php?p=56···tcount=9 Netflix is in the latest Windows version but it has bugs. Boxee probably does not want to deal with all the users reporting bugs so they edited the post to remove the directions on how to enable Netflix.
