| Bell/Acanac can but Teksavvy can't?
Hi, I'm a bit intrigued and dismayed by the response one of my friends got from Teksavvy when she wanted to sign up for the PHS connection. She had been an Acanac user for the last year and wanted to move to something which is not as expensive as Acanac in the second year. After all options she said Teksavvy looked like the best option.
However, when she ordered the connection TS said she will need to pay for the dry loop connection as well. I was assuming she already had the dry loop as she was using Acanac since the last year.
So after checking her options she called Bell as they had a 3month free offer and they didn't have any problem sending her the package and didn't even ask her for the dryloop!
Soon after Acanac called her and offered her a "relatively" good deal and they never talked about the dry loop.
She is paying much more than she would have had she gone with TS yearly plan. But I'm wondering why TS was adamant on getting the dryloop activated if Acanac and Bell have no problem on that end whatsoever. |

Bell also doesnt use the term dry loop, they dont charge their own customers a dry loop fee.
But Acanac should be subject to dry loop costs. Maybe Acanac throws it in? or makes up for it in Higher 2nd year costs? |

Acanac takes a loss in the first year. They could be absorbing the cost of the dryloop also. I'm not sure.
Every wholesaler has to pay for dryloop costs according to the band rate.

Neither Bell or Acanac is charging anything extra for the dry loop. Acanac never charged her for it during the last subscription period either. |

I have heard that Acanac eats the dry loop fees, although it does say on their website that they charge an extra $8 a month.

Bell may not be using the term, but I know someone personally who is being charged for the "dry loop" for the last few years. So your claim of not charging their own customers isn't 100% correct.
The math for the high second year costs also doesn't work when you compare it to TS. They charged something around $17/month for year 1. Now it is $33/month (with 1month extra) = around $600 for 2yrs. With TS it would be $31.45/month = $750 !! |

Can anyone confirm that acanac either charges or "eats" dry loop fees?
How about other providers?
I got suspicious about this the other day, wondering if Teksavvy really remits the dry dsl band rates to bell, and if they do, are they
making a profit on them, or if 100% goes to Bell. |

I was with Acanac from Oct 2007 to Oct 2008 for the One year package, they did not eat the dryloop fee at the time.
I was billed as follows (up front)
18.95 x12
+
7.95 (or 8.95, can't remember exactly) x12
for my first year of internet.

According to Acanac's website, they charge a flat $8 fee for dry loop (listed as naked DSL, found here).
If your friend isn't paying this fee, it's likely that Acanac is just eating the fee for the first year as part of their promotion.
Bell did charge retail customers the band rate for dry loop once upon a time, but no longer does so. However, Bell almost never proactively migrates customers off of old platforms or packages, so someone who signed up when band rate charges still were being applied will likely still be charged for it until she calls in and updates her package.
Even with the band rate charge, given that the vast majority of customers in Ontario and Quebec are in bands A-D and that the few who aren't are probably too far away from a DSLAM/remote to get DSL service anyway, Teksavvy still works out cheaper than Bell. Bell HS Performance is $47.95 + $3.95 mandatory modem rental fee, for a total of $51.90. The most current promotion I'm aware of is $5 off for 12 months, so if we want to include that the total ends up being $46.90 for the first year. Teksavvy by comparison in rate band D is $29.95 + $10.98, for a total of $40.93.
Looks to me like Bell has to drop the rate band on their own customers just to stay even remotely competitive. |

This is not an apple/orange comparison. Both companies are DSL providers! If it was that kind of comparison, do you really think Acanac would be getting any customers?
I won't try to move this off-topic anymore but just want to state that I am TS user and suggest my friends to go with TS only. This post is not about who is better, but about policy and charges levied by different companies to different users. |

| First off, any company can sell at a loss temporarily in order to be competitive. This is fairly common practice.
Second item worth mentionning is that Acanac is a spinoff of Canaca which is a med-sized business targeted IT company. They can afford to take a temporary hit, to gain clients.
This could be another reason that they may have chosen to eat the dryloop fee for the first year.

Many companies provide DSL service but only a few provide excellent customer service and technical support. The companies who provide service for ridiculously low prices usually skimp in those areas. That's what I meant by comparing apples and oranges. |

Yes, TS is indeed cheaper than Bell even with the dry loop added up. Acanac as it turns out, has offered $33.50 (after taxes) as monthly charge for 13months. This includes all the charges. |

The only thing good that came out of Acanac is their VOIP service. Can't beat it for $9.95 / month for unlimited calling in NA with 10+ calling features.

As with any business, they do mark up the cost. Check the tariffs. A Band A monthly rate is $8.50 / 2 = $4.25/month according to the Access Services Tariff item 105.
