Pleas help selecting a Wireless Router with VPN and firewall

I need help choosing a firewall/router with VPN that connects to the internet by wireless. This is backwards to the way most routers seem to work. Most have a wired internet connection and the devices connect wirelessly. I have a wireless internet connection and my devices connect wired. I don't know what routers will work this way because I need a firewall and VPN also.

Here is what I am doing if this helps. I have a device with an IP address (it's not a computer) and I have a wireless internet connection from Frontier at this remote location. I need a device that will enable me to talk to this remote device over a VPN through the wireless internet from my office. Just like a wired Broadband Firewall/Router except wireless.

Thanks

Re: Pleas help selecting a Wireless Router with VPN and firewall

How does the wireless internet connect? Is there a wireless modem that they give/sell you?

A normal wireless router will not be able to pick up a WISP connection, so you'll need a wireless modem. That wireless modem will have some sort of wired port on it that you can then connect to a router.

If you needto have a VPN on that side of the connection, get a router like the Linksys WRT54GL and flash it with DD-WRT firmware. This is the cheap way of doing things but it works very well. The VPN edition of DD-WRT will allow you to do a PPTP or OpenVPN connection through your router, assuming Frontier is giving you a public IP address...

fortinet.com has exactly what youre looking for commercially, but the price is high

You could build a good one with a linux box housing a wireless card that will bridge.

learning linux is fun so far

The internet is wireless any laptop with a wireless card can connect to it, so I assume any wireless router can connect as well. The company we are buying the service from is frontier so I will look into the device you are talking about. Do you know the model and price.
Thanks

I know the P330W wifi router by zyxel can act as a wifi client unit (wireless connect to the wireless modem of the ISP), just not sure if it would pass through VPN traffice in this capacity - suggesting attaching it, wired to a zywall 2plus (smallish vpn firewall router) or something like the USG100 more robust small business firewalll router.

I am not sure I understand exactly what it is you are looking for, but Cradlepoint has a new unit that appears to support VPN pretty heavily. It supports most current aircards including 4G.

Check out the specifics MBR1100: »www.wirelessnwifi.com/Cradlepoint-MBR1100
