The pro may not have been a pro is one answer. The mark was put in after the coin was struck. Could it have happened in the mint? I doubt it, since there is no reason to strike it again.

No one has yet mention the obvious (at least to me) the "bullet mark" is to the back of Kennedy's head, sound familiar? :hmm:

Yup. The 64 half is a silver coin. Contains .36oz silver, IIRC.
Silver is about $13.50, so $4.86 is the silver value. I never heard of such an error, contact a coin shop and ask. True, It's just another way to part a rube and his money.
IMO most of the "collectible" markets feed on people's need to have something "rare" or "different", and assign artificially inflated values to those items.
And there are always those that will pay a premium for something the marketers deem "rare" and fall for their pricing schemes.

A good example of this is baseball cards, some people are happy paying thousands dollars for a piece of cardboard that sold in a pack of gum for a few cents....at the end of the day, all they have a piece of cardboard.
Unless they can convince some other sucker to buy it off them at a profit...

Bottom line, It's their money..... they can do what they like with it.

Question is the RARETY of the defect, design or odd physical.... how many got out before the Mint noticed and recycled the rest. And even then would need to be near mint condition.

Going back to that early upside down biplane early airmail stamp...one especially postmarked not a great deal, but you actually have a full virgin sheet a LOT of money. (assuming you find a willing collector)

And actually that being a last year actually silver coin even the metal is worth more than the face value likely.

I have all clad quarters from both mints since '65 in folders except for a few "P" state quarters minted '06-'08 and the "P" District of Columbia quarter minted early this year. Likewise for dimes. The flaw (depending how many there are) maybe a bit more, but again if circulated (it looks to be) not a lot.

Stamp people will tell you the same thing flaw are only valuable ONLY if a very few got out/saved (like the famous upside down Biplane air mail stamp, and then mostly in full sheet), and again unpostmarked or un/minimally circulated.

Which is the so silly thing about the 1 run quarters and commerative stamps... SO MANY collect them because they are told to and suckers.... unless truely mint condition worth virtually NOTHING, and even then so little because now so many do.

Do you know the professional as well as examined his credentials?
Anyone can call themselves an expert. Just look at some of the "computer experts here" flooating around the web and this site. I would not trust them to turn a computer on let alone tell me how to fix something.

If not a counterfeit, it would be valued either at the silver content price or just plain fifty cents. The Kennedy Half Dollar is still minted and sold to the public in bags and rolls.
