8744675 posted : Estimating the value of old coins is like estimating the quality and cost of a diamond. There are many factors and along with that comes uneducated buyers and snake oil salesmen. Pristine coins will be worth more, scratches and wear decrease the value. I found a 1902 Gold $2.50 coin I found in the house I bought, and it was difficult to estimate it's value. What I discovered is that in order to sell a coin of considerable value, you have to first send it off to a professional service that grades the coin and seals it in a mount to protect it. You have to pay them a fee, and they will return the coin with the rating they assigned to it. The ratings provide a standard of measurement that allows a buyer to compare coins without seeing them and have reasonable certainty of it's value. The various services adhere to strict rating standards and most serious collectors will only buy a coin that's been professionally rated.
