After all AT&T is _THE_ phone company it would be trivial for them to hook up another copper pair and use that for U-Verse ...
Not here. Only a 25 pair F2 on the poles. I am certain that no spare pair is available for another drop to this premises. California PUC only requires 1.5 x the number of premises passed in the F2. And the line guys, working on a voice problem, assure me that there was no pair to swap to for the problem. No spare pair, no Uverse until the pair we have is freed up of the DSL connection.

Unless the Southeastern states were harsher on Bellsouth than California was on The Pacific Telesis Group, it might be the same in AT&T Southeast.

Anti-competitive? Wouldn't that be a little counter productive? It encourages people to stick with their current provider.

Getting cablemodem for a couple weeks might be a good option to get you through the downtime.

I agree and never said AT&T should just disconnect Earthlink DSL -- they should leave it alone.

After all AT&T is _THE_ phone company it would be trivial for them to hook up another copper pair and use that for U-Verse... I have U-Verse without phone service (after I ported to VoIP since there was no U-Verse VoIP here)

AT&T could install U-Verse alongside any other service you have.
Uverse uses the same copper pair as DSL. Unless you order another line, AT&T has to disconnect the current DSL service before they can set up Uverse. If you have Earthlink DSL, then AT&T has to pull the plug on the Earthlink DSL service.

Government regulations take a dim view of one provider unilaterally disconnecting another provider's service because of the possibility of slamming. I am pretty sure that this has already been explained to you. You can't have two different DSL connections on the same copper pair.

This is made up BS, pulled straight out of your nether regions.

The actual reason is because the government has regulations to try to prevent bad telcos from switching customers without their knowledge or consent (aka "slamming"). You are paying the price for a nanny baby sitter government to protect stupid people from themselves.

So either you have to live without internet for 2+ weeks or you have to factor in the cost of ordering cable internet into your costs of switching.

I canceled TV after 17 days - I did genuinely try it but it was missing too many locals compared to Comcast. I mainly ordered TV to avoid the $149 install charge.

I had no problem canceling TV in less than 30 days and no charges on the bill.

I also applied for both the $50 and $200 rebates as they showed up on the rewards website and have cashed both checks. I didn't think I would be eligible for the $200 since I had already canceled TV at that point, but had nothing to lose by trying.

I am still happy with U-verse Internet which is priced more reasonably than Comcast.

I have decided to wait a week. But yes, it is 150 setup fee, but that includes the first month, so I figured its essentially 100 dollar setup fee, and the 50ish for the service.
Where did you see that? All the reps in the store and on the phone state 150 + first month

Honestly, I'm amazed that anyone would ever pay a setup or installation fee for a communications service any more. I have never once, over 15 years (cable, modem line, DSL, U-verse) paid a company a fee for the pleasure of becoming their customer. (Well, except for cell phone service.) Maybe I've always been lucky and stumbled onto their offerings when they were having special deals, but...I don't think so. When I first signed up with Pac Bell for DSL service (what, 10 years ago?) they wanted to charge $200 (I think) just for the DSL modem. I only had to hint to the agent that this was a problem, and she said, "OK, I'll be happy to waive that for you." Especially in today's cut-throat market, it's almost certainly just a matter of asking. Everything's negotiable...

I would suggest calling in your order and politely pointing out that you would like to switch to U-verse, but the install fee makes it too expensive for you. Usually they can either waive it or give you credits. Let us know how you do.

I believe the self install is for additional services AFTER the RG is already in the house.
Say you had TV only and wanted internet later...that type of thing.

$100? They quote $150 for an internet-only install around here. An AT&T employee claimed in another thread that he had been told that they were going to allow self-install for non-TV setups, but I've yet to see this - it may not even be prudent.

It is my understanding, that if you went with u200, it could take 3-6 weeks for them to send your 200 dollar cash back. In that time, you cannot cancel the tv service till you receive the check. which in the end would cost me 2 months of paying 100+ dollar bills till the check arives, and alot of pain waiting on the check. The other option is to do the Uverse Family tv package, and the 12mbps max internet, and pay 1 month of tv, and cancel after that with no installation fee, for a total of 50 bucks essentially for installation of internet. Unless there is another way to make it cost nothing for installation.

Order the TV service, have the TV and Internet service installed than cancel the TV service.
