Daaaaaamn! It has taken me all of five years, and I have only just barely reached 1.0 TB. And I am slowing down because I am actually starting to watch some of those shows.

Road Runner, eh? They are evaluating one of the stingier caps proposed for implementation by ISPs. You've gone 6x what Comcast, the most generous ISP cap out there, allows. It might be time to look at other providers with higher capacities (tend to have slower speeds, though). RR might not long let you get away with moving such a prodigious volume of data.

Re: [Newsgroups] kc.rr.com usenet throttled!

I knew $14.99/month for unlimited was too good to be true. Giganews... I'm coming back.

(maybe I am mistaken about their speed. I might have been downloading from both giganews and newsdemon without realizing)

thanks for the link! I saw it earlier, but I thought it was just for newsgroupdirect

I meant KB
I figured any typo would be overlooked considering the many different types I used
Mb/s, MB/s, kb/s

etc etc

I fixed it

thanks

1800 kbps (kilobits per second) does not equal 1.8 MB/s (megabytes per second).

I realize this may be a typo on your part, but you should still be careful about the uppercase/lowercase, because these things matter, especially when you're trying to resolve an issue with speed.

Take a look at this thread: »[Newsgroups] Usenet speed consistently down by 20%

Shows you are not the first to encounter this with Newsdemon / NewsgroupsDirect...although the particular users in that thread consumed a lot less than you did.

One or the other (Newsdemon or Giganews) throttling your speeds back would not affect the other.

I am somewhat surprised RR hasnt said something to you though.

That's what I am trying to figure out. I've looked at throttle lists and Road Runner isn't on them. I want to know if there is a test I can use to see if I am, in fact, being throttled. The test was negative before, but now it might be different.

does your ISP throttle if you are a bandwidth hog?

Hi guys. A month ago I found out about newsgroups. Boy was I happy. I got the 10GB/2week free Giganews trial. I ran through the 10GB in one day. I paid half price for an introductory Giganews account that had unlimited download/bandwidth, 20 SSL connections, and alternate ports for $15. After two weeks went by, I decided I wanted to keep using newsgroups. I searched for a less expensive provider ($30/month at Giganews). I came across Newsdemon on a site that also offered 35% off, so I was paying $15/month for life and I got unlimited download/bandwidth, 20 SSL connections, and alternate ports all for $22.99 - 30% = $14.99/month forever. Good deal.

Anyway, to my point. On both Giganews and Newsdemon using GrabIt as my newsreader, I was downloading at an extremely steady 1,800KB/s (1.8MB/s). I am paying for KC Road Runner Turbo which is advertised at 15,000kbps down and 1,000kbps up. I literally had the straightest bandwith line you could imagine. It ranged from 1,780KB/s to 1,799KB/s.

One month goes by and I've downloaded about 1.5TB of binaries. All of a sudden, my bandwidth has been cut by more than a third. I start up GrabIt and it downloads at the normal 1,800Kbps for about 1-2 minutes and instantly drops to 500KB/s. It's just as stable as before, but now it ranges from 480KB/s to 499KB/s. If I close and then open GrabIt, it does the same thing. It starts out fast and instantly drops to 500KB/s right on cue.

These are the ports/servers I have used:
Giganews @ news.giganews.com - ports: 23, 80, 443 (SSL), 563 (SSL)
Newsdemon @ useast.newsdemon.com - ports: 119, 443, 8080
Newsdemon @ us-secure.newsdemon.com - ports 80 (SSL), 81 (SSL), 563 (SSL)

I can't imagine it's my news provider, because I had an account simultaneously at Giganews and Newsdemon for two weeks while this was happening. It isn't the SSL connections that slow it down either.

I have forwarded ports: 23, 80, 81, 119, 443, 563, and 8080 to the the IP of whichever computer I used. I tried 3 different computers. 2 were wired and 1 was wireless. I also set those ports to High in the QoS of my Linksys WRT54G2 router.

I remember a newsgroup throttle test I used once, but I can't seem to find it. All I can find are torrent tests.

Can anyone help? What do I do?

I did a speed test and got 15.2Mbps down and 0.96Mbps up.

EDIT: KB/s instead of Kbps. Sorry
