| Re: moving to Houston? Oh, it also gets quite windy at times. (See Hurricane Ike for details.)
The temperatures only tell part of the story - it's also quite humid. We lived down close to NASA for several years and used to laugh about the weather being 95/95 - 95 degrees w/ 95% humidity

| Re: moving to Houston? also I think your going to find the cost of living,( housing or apart,groceries,basics-ie electric ect) a heck of a lot cheaper here, but remember you have to learn 3 MAJOR things when moving to texas,
1 you have to learn how to wear pointed towed cowboy boots, ( to kill the roach's in the corner) 2, you have to learn how when someone blows their horn at you, you give them a friend Texas 1 finger salute, 3, you have to learn how to chew tobacci & spit out a side window,
and yes the heat & Humidity can be dangerious, don't push yourself yp hard physically untill you get use to weather change,
what area of houson thinking about moving to? "J' -- To ask is to learn, IF U think u know it all & never ask, then U probably never will

| Hello there Canuck! I'm the exact opposite from you. I moved from Houston,Texas to Toronto,Canada in 1987. I have not returned to visit my ex beloved Houston but let me state some differences I noticed.
-In Houston the biggest ethnic group are Hispanics as opposed to Toronto's hindus and chinese.
-Streets are wider in Houston.
-The city is bigger in area than Toronto, and almost all houses have big yards.
-There are no highrise residential buildings in Houston, at least not as rampant as in Toronto.
-Almosr all cars are bigger, V-8's and there's lots of trucks and guns.
-The food/restaurant scene in Houston is just awesome, but the variety in food menus is far less than in Toronto.
-Insurance and gas is cheaper in Houston.
-There are wide spaces between neighborhoods and houses in some areas and having a car is essential.
-The construction and service-related area is saturated in Houston and the pay is VERY low.
-You will see a lot of restaurant and store franchises you won't know about, you might know McDonald but you don't know Jack-In-The-Box, a most delicious burger was sold there.
Overall Houston feels more free and carefree than Toronto, a city which now resembles a fascist state. There are less regulations in Houston in ALL areas. For example a Daisy BB gun which we need a ridiculous real firearm licence here in Toronto is sold in Houston K-Mart stores to any underaged kid.
You will also notice beer and alcohol sold in every corner store and gas station.

Actually, we have quite a lot of high-rise apartment/condos now, especially near the Galleria, midtown, and the medical center. lol I used to go ice-skating there in a huge mall.
QUESTIONS FOR PEOPLE STILL LIVING IN HOUSTON
-Is Marvin Zendler still alive and working for channel 13 (ABC)? He used to expose dirty restaurants and shady businesses.
-Does KTXH TV channel 20 still exists?
-Are cop cars still light-blue in color?
-Do "Whattaburger" fast-food restaurants still exist?
-When was the last time it snowed there? The only Houston snow I remember was in the 1984-1985 winter, it snowed 1 inch and the whole city was paralized, schools cancelled.
Here in Toronto we get dumps of 2 ft of snow and -27 temperatures and 3rd graders still walk to school

Yes and No. The station is still there but it is now part of "My Network Tv." 3. No, most of them are white with a blue stripe. 4. Yes, there are quite a few of them around town. They are basically Texas's version of In-N-Out. 5. We had a nice amount of snow on Christmas Eve 2004. Up to around 3" in some areas. Also 2008 we had some light snow. --

A few months ago we went to the Memorial City mall and they actually had hockey games going in their ice rink. I thought it was a great idea, unfortunately my wife didn't so I did not get to watch much of the game.

| Re: moving to Houston? When I was living in Houston in 1986 I remember this independent hamburger place called "Charley's" at Heights Blvd almost under the Katy Freeway, it was near a concrete canal/bayou that cuts across Houston, the place had the tastiest and biggest burgers I ever seen, I mean a whopper-looking burger weighed like 8 lbs I swear. It was very popular with cops, I wonder if it's still there. | |
