The wife and I are going up to our place in Spruce Basin, north of Cotopaxi for a couple of days. Hey Co_Chris, i want to know where hot surfer springs is at. I've been to all the springs in CO, I thought, but I must have missed that one.

Hot Sulphur Springs, maybe?

Most likely yes with the humidity.

visting my mom and my inlaws from my hometown. going to be quite a change going from 700ft and 110 to 7300ft and 70 and wet and rainy.
hopefully the annual pancake breakfast and parade aren't rained out, though some clouds would make a great backdrop for the fireworks display that my father-in-law helps put on. gotta love (skilled and trained) rednecks with things that go *boom*...

That is one beautiful drive. The best memory I have of that road is from the late 70's or early 80's. I was at the YMCA camp just outside of Grand Lake. My wife was there for a meeting of counselors of a girls group. I was there for the fishing. The first night at the camp fire there was a flat lander from Michigan who had come over Berthoud Pass to get there. He was expounding on how he was let down by the mountains as he had heard the Rockies were so grand. That got under my skin a bit. Then later he asked me where he could go to see some "good scenery". Bad Mistake. Trail Ridge Road was a lot less improved in those days. It had very narrow shoulders and lanes. There were few if any guard rails. Sooo...., I showed him where to go for some "really good scenery". He left at about 9:00 the next morning and didn't get back until just before supper and he wasn't a happy camper. He laid into me about sending him on that road without warning. I just looked at him, grinned, and said: "I just didn't want you going home and telling people that my Rocky Mtns weren't as full of grandeur as you had heard." Turns out he took a really slow, careful trip over Trail Ridge Road and then drove all the way back to Denver to come back over Berthoud Pass so he wouldn't have to drive it twice. There was a bit of jocularity at his expense. He was talking to me again by the end of the week. He said he'd make sure to let everyone know the Rockies were very majestic when he got home.

Did you take your truck or the wife's car? If the car, try imagining the road 15% narrower and you're driving a late 70's full size wagon with 4 kids under 14 and you're the only adult in the car.

a late 70's car that is not even in my league . Took the car can't fit 5 people in a 2 door truck.. I did not even try pikes peak in my truck. The car s the only way to do this.

You ride bike a lot. You need to do Pikes Peak the right way, on a bike. I did it in 2005. I don't know what it costs now, but back then it was $110 dollars. That included the van ride to the top, all the personal equipment, the bike, the access fee, and breakfast before and a good lunch after. The lead guide only had five of us that trip and I was the only one with gravel experience When we took off I was right behind him. We opened a big gap and he didn't realize that I was the only one with him at first. After that we rested a little more often to let the others catch up. You need to give that a try it is really a good time.
