Can I use a used modem with Rogers?

Rogers has this new promotion. If you buy a modem for 99 then will give you a 99 credit and 3 months free. But I thought can I just buy a used modem and sign up anyways? When I tried to do this, they asked for the serial number. Will the serial number on the used modem work? I want to figure this out first before I buy a used modem or the rogers one. thanks

Re: Can I use a used modem with Rogers?

if they are giving you a brand new modem for free, why would you buy a used one?

that makes no sense.

Probably have to sign up for an implied contract for the deal.

If you really want to, you could. You just have to give them your modem's MAC address.

I really don't understand why though.

@bell.ca

the new rogers modem costs 99 + tax

you can buy a used one for 30, so I'll save 80+

but if it doesn't work then I'm out 30

but I'm thinking the serial number on a different modem will be different than the rogers one and they will question it.

Re: Can I use a used modem with Rogers?

The promotion probably requires both the purchase of the modem and enrollment for the service, and previous promotions like this were typically processed at point-of-sale. If that is actually the case (check the fine print and/or call and ask) that means that you wouldn't qualify for the $99 credit or 3 months free if you're signing up with a used modem.

You can use your own modem. Just tell them the MAC address and serial number and it'll work on their network.

As for the promotion, you essentially are getting a free modem. You pay $99, and you receive a $99 credit on your Rogers account. Why would you go out and buy your own?

TBD ... that is assuming the person you talk with will bend the rules. The rule has been that the modem must be one that was sold by Rogers, or through a Rogers authorized retailer. All those modems were in their databases. Getting a modem added has USUALLY been impossible, unless you very fortunate (for example, you knew someone at Rogers who could/would add your modem to the register).

but you already stated you get a $99 credit when you buy the modem from Rogers, so at most, you are out the taxes...buying a used modem would be more expensive as the new one is essentially "free".

See the thread:
»Rogers High Speed Internet Free Modem Offer/3 mnoths Free

the caveat: you supply your own modem they may wash their hands of problems. Why bother if the modem is basically free?

Also check the date - june 30th.

What I've done in the past is gone online with Robbers chat, and given the Serial/Mac and HFC numbers, they will verify it will work on their network and it's not hot (Rogers property).

@rogers.com

Their is a reason why your getting the 99 dollar rebate
first of all the rebate is to offset the purchase of a new one
secondly you will be asked to go into a commitment because you are getting it for free.
why would you activate a used one ??
makes no sence because you will still be asked to go on the commimtent like everyone else and you wont have a warranty on a used item

Re: Can I use a used modem with Rogers?

There is NO term commitment unless the CSR or salesman didn't read the bulletin. And by term I mean 1 or 2 year term not 3 months.

Re: Can I use a used modem with Rogers?

hate to tell yo but by saying that later on ...does not pass it
I know I work for rogers .many people I speak to the terms are told and it is documented on that day ...then they try to come back later an dlie ...looking at notes it is usually a trend and habitual people who tell tales

nothing is free
