Re: DCCNET/EASLINK - Packet loss/stutter?

[RFC] Connection / Speed Problems Checklist

Connection / Speed Problems Checklist ... first draft

What connection did you lose?

[d] I don't know - Most of the time I stay connected just alot of packet loss?

What was computer doing at the time?

[e] P2P -- bit-torrent, games ; very busy - (Games in particular, no Bit Torrent)

What are the symptoms of the problem -- what can you observe? 90% packet loss, dropped connection sometimes.

What have you done to diagnose the problem?
Removed Router from the equation
New modem
Several computers experience the same symptoms
Replaced Cables
Fresh load of windows

How often does it happen?
15-45 minutes?

What do you think triggers it?
God hates me getting decent kill death ratio's. (I have no idea seems random)

What do you think fixes it?
Time? I don't do anything, It only lasts a few seconds

What is your connectivity set-up?
Eastlink Cable -->My Modem-->My Router---> 4 machines.

* state make and model of modem and router
Modem: Motorolla SB5101 Surfboard
Router: Linksys WRT54GL
Router #2: Linksys WRT54G (My old one, i tested with)

Suggestions:

Learn to use ping and traceroute.
-I put a ping to google into a .cmd file so i could run it real quick and during the spike my pings do time out.

Use precise language, avoiding vague expressions such as "my internet died" or "I got disconnected".
-MAI INTERWEBZ IZ NOT WORKSING

Is your router running Tomato firmware?
Best to ping your WAN gateway when you have problems.
I suspect you are suffering from "connection surges" which use up all your router's memory. In this context, "connection" means NAT-SPI-connection-tracking.

Learn to find your router's log, and your modem's log.
(Holler if you need help.)

If you are running Linksys firmware, I strongly suggest installing Tomato 1.25, since it turns your Linksys router from a toy appliance into a professional router.
