The Awful bar isn't gone yet. Don't suggest the addons because I don't care how it looks. It must show all, sort, and search like the FF2 bar and the addons don't help with that. I'm perfectly happy with FF2 forever until they fix that.
You can disable the 'awesome' bar, you do realize that right?

Is this the same fix that disables awful bar but also provides you no history in the address bar drop down (like available in FF2 and any version of IE?). My experience has been that when trying to disable awful bar you loose the ability to use your history or autocomplete in the address bar. not really a great "work around".

Well it does get rid of the drop down. I thought that's what annoyed you? What's the difference between the drop down in IE/FF2 and the FF3? They're both annoying to have. Seems like IE/FF2 predicts based on history whereas FF3 predicts based on history and bookmarks. I rather it do neither so that's why I disable it.

This add-on replaces the awesomebar and makes it so that it only displays your history (not your bookmarks). »https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7429

There are a few things it does differently that are annoying. One as you mentioned is basing the drop down on your bookmarks. The other, and it's been a while since I've used awful bar so I may be wrong, it also doesn't clear out your history (bookmarks or history) when you clear your cache. Maybe this was always just bookmarks? I have so many bookmarks it's hard to tell.

Like severach See Profile I was hoping that there would be an option to disable awful bar built-in to FF. I'm surprised as there are enough people that dislike it that you'd think it would warrant an option to do so. It could even come enabled by default so that whatever team at Mozilla developed it didn't let their baby to be forgotten.

Anyway.. thanks. I'll wait and see when I get FF3.5 what options are available then.

EDIT: from the link you provided above

quote:
Long Description

For Firefox 3.5 users, this add-on is no longer needed, so installing it will just change a built in Firefox 3.5 preference to only search visited history pages and uninstall itself. See the following page for more info:

could someone have been listening to the complaints about awful bar?

How can I get rid of the warning that appears when I press Ctrl+Shift+Del. In 3.0 I think there was an option to have it ask each time or not. Pretty damn annoying to have it pop up a box all the time again now.
I share your pain. Dont' Ask on 3.5 Clearing History - CTRL+SHIFT+DEL

I sure hope this is the update that will stop the browser from freezing every 2 seconds.
Hmmm.

I've never experienced that behavior, so I guess Mozilla must've given me a special update four or five years ago.

What is FF doing about blocking images and audio? Flashblock and Noscript do some of the blocking, and I also use Tab Permissions to turn off images - especially on Yahoo.
I don't care how fast FF is with HTML5 - If I don't want graphics, I don't want graphics.
I've gotten rid of the awful bar, used the fix to override Windows Security, don't keep history, and use Track me not.
I saw one site say AdBlock plus works, but don't see that listed, either.
Thanks,
Weezy

There does appear to be an option in FF3.5 to change the Location bar to search by "History and Bookmarks", "History", "Bookmarks", or "Nothing".

AdBlock Plus is working on FF3.5 here. It wasn't listed as incompatible when the update did a scan of my add-ons, and it's continued to function as usual since the upgrade.

That plugin only gets rid of the bookmarks. I could have erased all the bookmarks and got that which isn't so bad since the only good bookmark is a dead bookmark.

The location history needs to be fast. FF3 made it slow.

The location history needs to display an infinite number of items so I can erase them. Infinity - 1 is one too few.

But I can tolerate all that. Until the sorting and searching problem is fixed FF3 is utterly unusable.

The problem is that as yet no browser has ever found a good way to manage bookmarks. Each copies the other and all are horrible. FF2 got very close to self-manage perfection entirely by accident and as always, no good deed goes unpunished.

I had to add the network.dns.disablePrefetch preference manually. It was not listed in about:config.

That is for the 3.011 or whatever the last 3.0 release was.
Does it still work on 3.5? I don't keep history or cookies disabling the awful bar is ok by me. I'd probably disable that geocaching, too.
Now what did 3.5 do about windows security? I couldn't get one of the older versions to download anything as I have IE locked down so tight it can barely run. Mozilla finally published a workaround for that and hinted that 3.1 (now3.5) would have an option to not tie into windows security.
Trying to find workarounds for some problems is impossible.

Re: Firefox 3.5 Final Released

with "FF 3.5", i notice that, when i download the updates for "windows defender", from the MS website (»www.microsoft.com/security/porta···aspx#top ) , "FF 3.5" changes the file, somehow, so that, when i try to run the file, i get an alert from "windows", asking me if i want to allow the file to run, and, when i run the file, it generates some regkeys, "HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Systemcertificates\Trustedpublisher" (with no "value" ).. i don't get the same alert, from "windows", asking me if i want to allow the file to run, and the regkeys are not generated, either, when running the same file, when it is downloaded with either "IE 6" or with "FF 3.0".. maybe this is a security-enhancement in "FF 3.5"? or, is "FF 3.5" "corrupting" the file? i don't know.. i guess someone would say that, since the file still runs, it was not "corrupted"..

No, that's just FF conforming to an existing security feature in Windows.

Go here: »www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/geolocation/
then click on the blue link that says, "Give it a try!".

There's another one, on Flickr I think, but I can't remember the address right now. I'll get back to you if I find it again.

I was reading the Mozilla forums and apparently you still have to disable windows security in Firefox config.
Now if I remember rightly, FF said that windows security would be an option for 3.1 at the time. I guess not.
I just saw an article about browsers doing away with bookmarks.
I prefer bookmarks over history.
It's getting too hard to configure a browser to work the way you want!
