Kardinal : Pierre McGuire was commenting on Schremp the other day during his daily slot on Team1200 (just after 8am, in case you want to tune in via their website) and the problem is his skating: he was good enough at the junior level to seem fast but at the NHL level he's lacking speed and finesse and he hasn't improved in several years. He's got good hands but he's not a Ryan Shannon in the speed department nor is he big so he just hasn't worked out so far.

Hopefully a new start with NYI will motivate him to work on his skating and find a spot on a team that needs his other abilities.

dirtyjeffer : Schremp is claimed off waivers by the Islanders (from the Oilers).

i never understood the Schremp story...he was AWESOME with the Knights, was a first round pick (25th overall)...he was a sniper, who had wicked hands and quick skating...not a big guy, so probably lacked in the physical department, but man, he could skate and shoot the puck like so few could...i wonder if he just got depressed and demotivated in Edmonton...unfortunately, the Islanders aren't much better, but perhaps playing with Tavares will help inject new life...i always liked Schremp and he was great in London when he was a Knight.

Saying the Leafs don't have any prospects is a very ignorant statement. Ever heard of Kadri? Bozak? Stalberg? Gustavsson?

They are all also better hockey players and paid less. Which is the point.

That's all of 4 prospects, who may or may not pan out. Three of whom where not drafted....but clearly the leafs have prospects.

Some are only paid a little bit more, how can you say Mike Green is a better hockey player, they don't have play the same position.

Prospects don't necessarily have to be drafted. I don't know where you got that from.

I said "seems" to be injury-prone. Given his past health issues, it is normal, in my opinion, to think that he is more at risk.

The Flash : Some seem to forget his stats are better than they seem, he had 36G and 24A in 70 Regular Season Games, plus 6G and 5A in 11 Playoff Games. That's 42 G, 29 A, 71 points in 81 games, we all know that playoff points are more valuable. He was also Boston's leading goal scorer.

I don't think we have had a potential elite winger since Mogilny and that was ages ago. He has the potential to hit 50 goals when the Leafs have someone like Kadri playing with him in the later years.

it is about making your team better, but if you go around and start submarining every team out there, good luck on getting anyone to work on a trade with you when the shoe is on the other foot...remember, while they are all "competing" against each other, it still takes two to make a trade (or deal)...no one wants to do business with an ass, they would rather see him fail, then get fired.

alamarco : Do you have any information on signing players who are injured? I'm not sure if they would count. They wouldn't even need Toronto's help if that were the case. They could of signed Kessel to the amount the other team wanted and shipped him off. I'm sure given the opportunity to play for a team like San Jose and Kessel would agree to a sign and trade.

I agree Burke wouldn't have looked good, but he did give Boston ample warning what his objective was. Not to mention is it about looking good or making your team better?

Kessel is a long term injury. His salary wasn't going to affect the cap until November. Chiarelli would have until then to deal with the cap problem. And once he had the player under contract through the RFA match, it gives him more options.

dirtyjeffer : i think Burke wanted to play somewhat fairly with Chiarelli...even during the interview after last nights game, he praised Chiarelli for driving a hard bargain (not that he would say he got him for nothing, but, you know what i mean, it's a respect thing)...at the end of the day, he got what he wanted, and while the price was perhaps a little steep, sometimes you have to pay for what you want...Burke figures the amount of freebies he was able to sign without having you use picks or players on, it was worth it, and for that, i agree.

Boston couldn't haggle that high because they were up against the cap.

If there hand was pressed with an offer sheet, they would have, then made trades later to fix it. Chiarelli said as much.

Boston wanted Kessel to leave on their terms for what they wanted.

Burke wanted to be 100% sure he got Kessel that's why he went the trade route.

Consider the following:

Boston didn't want to trade within the division. So, Boston looks to trade elsewhere. The only problem is, there isn't a single team out there with interest in Kessel who's going agree to a deal without it being contigent on a multi-year deal with Kessel.

Kessel wanted to go to Toronto. So, being an RFA, he has the right to choose what teams he negotiates with. If Chiarelli and team B agree on a deal that hinges on Kessel signing a deal with team B, that deal has little chance of happening since Kessel wanted to go to Toronto.

Now, Assume Burke and Kessel sign an offer sheet for 4.5 over 5 years. That opens doors for Boston. Boston can now go to all the teams interested in Kessel and say to them, I can get Kessel signed and delivered at 4.5 over 5 then flip him to you for whatever package you want. Sign and trade.

An offer sheet would have given Boston the upperhand that Burke wanted to avoid.

Burke would have lost out on the asset he wanted, and in the process helped Chiarelli out of his cap & asset jam.

There's a reason Burke is a NHL GM and you aren't.

Are Leaf fans going to be happy if they still really need a first rounder in 2011? That will be FOR the 2011-2012 season and that pick probably won't even play that season...

Kessel only missed the 2005 draft cutoff because of when his birthday is and would have been drafted up top with Crosby and Ryan.

Instead he goes 5th in 2006 only behind Erik Johnson, Jordan Staal, Jonathan Toews and Nicklas Backstrom.

If you think about it it's actually an amazing trade to reach back to the first few picks of 1 of the 2 deeper drafts we've had in the past 10 years and stealing it for a few future draft picks that might not matter as much especially if the Leafs have 15th pick or so in the next draft anyway.

Both parties had strong positions.

Boston would have matched the offer sheet and dealt with the cap issue by November. Chiarelli said as much.

Burke wanted to make sure he had him. That's why he offered more than the offer sheet was worth.

I think had Chiarelli not agreed to a trade, Burke would have gone the offer sheet route and hoped for the best.

Option 2: 1st, 2nd in 2010, 1st in 2011 to trade for the RFA rights to Kessel

So we go with option 2, instead of having an extra 1st round pick. Makes no sense except for the fact that Burke went on a tirade when Lowe plucked Penner from the Ducks. So it seems to me Burke didn't want to put out an offer sheet so he could save face.

Yes 2 1st round picks but Kessel IS a 1st round 5th overall pick, essentially we're just giving up a 1st rounder. I doubt the Leafs will be in the same position as last year picking top 10.

i was thinking the same thing, but the Leafs paid about what the price was going to be (everyone was saying he was going to get about $5 million per year)...a lot of teams don't have the cap space, the Leafs have tons...and Burke made a good point about picks...by picking up players like Bozak, Hanson, Gustafsson, etc, they are like first round picks that they got for free, so trading some for a top line winger, although still pricey, was still worth it in the long run...as well, the Leafs will most likely do better this year, so their picks won't be as good anyway.

Kessel is a 1st round pick, 5th overall...so really we gave up a 1st and 2nd. This is for a potential elite franchise winger, something we haven't had for a LONG time.

HiVolt : I think the price is too high only if the Leafs tank, which I don't think they will, the lineup is significantly better than last year.

Even if they don't make the playoffs they'll likely be picking 14-15th, which is not that big a deal.

The price the Leafs just paid for him is to high. A 1st, 2nd round draft pick in 2010 and a 1st round pick in 2011, this was way to high in my book.

Overall I think Michalek and Cheechoo are better for Ottawa than Frolov and Stoll though!

ZZZZZZZ : I saw quite a few games with S.J. last year and they didn't seem to play Michalek in key roles,plus I think both were hurt too.

But Michalek is only 25 and Cheechoo is too good to be that bad again.

Underachieved, or had one flash-in-the-pan season which landed them a big contract.......it's a fine line between the two. If Cheechoo's scoring takes an upturn (and he stays gritty) and Michalek turns into a first line winger (he does have speed), I'll be happy to admit I'm wrong. that's not a bad deal considering Heaters' insane contract and obvious personality flaws. Plus, the Sens have the image of being too soft for too long. Cheechoo would solve that problem.

Well, you have to look at it from SJ's perspective. They stripped Marleau of his captaincy and he's been a perptual playoff disappearing act. His contract is a bear if they don't want him. So if they did manage to turn him into another asset, it's a bonus. If that asset becomes a potential 50 goal scorer, even better.

The $7m price tag is a dog, however. In San Jose's mind, it's the $6m devil you know and don't want, vs the $7m devil who wants a fresh start.

There's always teams willing to take a chance on guys like Heatley, despite the cloud that is clearly looming over his head in Eastern and Southern Ontario.

Let's not forget, Marleau has NTC and has stated on several occasions his desire to stay in Southern California.

With all that said, I still wouldn't want him on the Leafs however.

Heatley has been traded to San jose in a 3 team deal which sends Patrick Marleau to the Kings and Jarrett Stoll and Alex Frolov to the Sens.

EDIT: Little side note that the teams are denying it at this point but that never means much.

dirtyjeffer : personally, i think the Leafs are better without him...sure, he can score, but i think next year's 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks are more important to the team in the long run...the Leafs aren't going anywhere this year...even if they squeak into the playoffs, they don't have the depth to go far...stay the course, finish near the bottom, let the rookies get lots of play time and practice, and continue the rebuild.

i am torn on Kessel...he is quick, skilled and young...but i think Boston has said he has underperformed...i hate to see the Leafs give up three draft picks to get him (the Leafs have a first, second and third round pick for the 2010 entry draft)...rumour has it they may be looking to use those picks for a trade...the Leafs traded their second and third round picks in 2011 for a 2nd round pick in 2010 so they have a pick in each round...of course, it could have simply been done so Burke has more to work with next year (in terms of drafting).

I'd love to have Kessel.. But not at the price of 3 draft picks this year if an offer sheet is signed for the price range needed to take the 3 picks.

Career AHL goaltender? I think he was supposed to be backup in the AHL for Toronto this year so I guess a starting job is better than that!

And Theo isn't making it back IMO. He didn't go out on his own terms but he also was not very good when he was finished. Now of course the argument could have been he wasn't in the state of mind to be the best player he could be but like you said he isn't and won't be the same player anymore. Good for him if he makes it to the minors though.

dirtyjeffer : wow...for one, he is 41...secondly, i don't think he has played in a long time...thirdly, he will have to get Bettman to re-instate him as he is still banned for his substance abuse issue from several years ago...i think he just wants to come back because he doesn't like how he left...that said, i don't think he will have much gas in that tank any more...while the current game works well for his size and speed, he isn't what he was 15 years ago.

ok, maybe you are joking, but i thought Fleury retired LONG ago.

Toronto doesn't have room for Pogge...he hasn't panned out as planned, and Toronto has the room to get a decent goalie who can play now...Pogge may never pan out (i hope he does though, he is a good kid), and perhaps a move like this will be better for him...Toronto (and other top tier markets) are tough to play in...the pressure is huge.

Nope. He filed for arbitration with Detroit. He SIGNED with Dynamo Moscow. There is an argument being made by the Wings and NHL that when Hudler applied for arbitration, he agreed to return to the NHL, or to the Wings specifically if they matched the arbitration award. By signing with Dynamo, basically, the Wings would have their terms set for a contract regardless, and if Hudler goes to the KHL, he would owe the Wings two years at the terms of the arbitration award if and when he returns before he could become a UFA.

Tons of talent, lack of consistent work ethic. Until he can prove he can play at a high level consistantly, he's not worth it. In an interview about a year ago, former Columbus GM Doug McLean described him as "all the talent in the world, and a goofball" because he was so all-over-the-place both on the ice and his general personality. He may end up in the KHL, or some NHL team may take a chance on him, but I doubt he'll get a multi-year deal and higher than $4M per season. Then again, there may be some fool trying to save his GM job who's desperate enough to make a deal like that.

Clipper : If you break it down, the trade isn't too bad...

Stralman has to take several strides to prove he can be an NHL player. Remember when he first came over? He said, I don't want to come to North America to not play in the NHL. In Toronto, I can't see a future on the blueline for him. He's got some great skating ability, but I think White brings more to the table as a whole package. There was a big risk of Stralman going back to Sweden when his contract expires.

So, analyze the trade.

Colin Stuart, Stralman, 7th rounder in 2011 for Primeau and 2nd rounder in 2010.

It essentially boils down to the this, Stuart for Primeau. Former 5th round marginal 27 year old who hasn't shown he can play consistently in the NHL, for 33 year old Primeau who's value has and always will be a grunt 3rd or 4th line checker. A decent one at that. He is definitely on the down side and injury plagued.

The other half is Stralman and a 7th rounder for a 2nd round pick. Stralman is a 7th round pick who had a fantastic world championship one year and Leaf media heralded him as the next Lidstrom and got the fans in a frenzy. In reality, he's got talent, but I don't think he had a future in Toronto. Wilson really didn't like him that much as you could see by Jamie Sifers playing over him.

So, really, as far as I'm concerned it's a wash. I don't think Stralman will ever become a top 2 or 3 defenseman, and he's going to be hard up to find a spot on the Flames defense coming out of camp.

Don't be surprised if Stralman ends up back in Sweden in a year or two. If that happens, this will be a case of getting value when you can. The trade is just meh really. If Primeau can stay healthy, he will provide some grit, checking, etc. An upgrade over the grit and checking we already have mind you.

Almost certainly. These 2nd and third tier players are looking for more money than they can get. GM's want value with a looming cap drop.

Kardinal : I think JR and Shanny will be late signings by teams that want that elusive "veteran's presence", or will hang up the blades and call it a career. I'm surprised that Tanguay hasn't been signed, but I think some of the others might be asking for too much money. Comrie made $4M for the past few years with NYI, so unless he's willing to take a cut I can't see a team being interested in him. I did find the beginning of July a bit quieter than usual, and not so many stupid numbers being thrown around at UFAs as in past years. We'll see, as there are still quite a few teams out there with cap space so now it's a matter of who blinks in the negotiations first as the teams have a pretty big talent pool to chose from while the players have a shrinking pool of possible markets for their skills.

Other notable and possibly valuable UFA's: Afinogenov, Moore, Numminen, Bertuzzi, Jason Williams, Calder, Marc Andre Bergeron, Tanguay, Shanahan, Comrie, Biron (so I guess Philly is going with Emery or Boucher?), Phillipe Boucher, Satan, Petr Sykora, McLaren, Roenick (notable mostly because I'm wondering if he will be signed anywhere), Legace, Malik, Cujo/Gerber(again wondering if they will be signed anywhere), May (don't think he's coming back to Toronto), Pyatt and Sundin.

And what about Zherdev? He was pretty bad ass first half last year and now it looks like the Rangers are going to walk away from arbitration with him leaving him what, going to Europe? It's so annoying when good players go to Europe when some of the players in the NHL just suck and get to stay.

idlewillkill : Schneider out doesn't really count...he was picked up late from Atlanta as a stop-gap/panic move. Spacek is solid, Mara's not bad. Gill is big, slow, and a very good penalty killer. It's counter-intuitive, that a guy that's ok defensively 5 on 5 is better on the PK, but he is.
Gainey's worst work was on the forwards. I've still yet to figure out why taking on Gomez' huge salary along with giving away the Habs' top prospect made sense in any way, shape or form.

Did you hear of any that were worth getting and wanted to play in Montreal? I didn't, and Vinny isn't coming. Between killer provincial taxes and the fact that their children have to go to school in French, I'd not be surprised that a lot of players don't want to play in Montreal in spite of the team's history. I think Gainey has made a lot of moves to change the face and style of the team, but I'm not convinced they are anything more than lateral rather than up the scale of being a better team. He's big and has a long reach, but don't ever mistake him for a touch player, a good skater, or having good hands. When Subban makes the big team, that'll be good for the Habs. He's entertaining, talented, and he'll be cheap at least for a while. :)

dirtyjeffer : you lost your Captain last year, Koivu who played his heart out in Montreal (even battled Cancer and came back)...during his absense last year, Kovalev was given the C, but when it was given back to Koivu, he was a big baby, was benched and is now in Ottawa (poor Ottawa)...they also lost Komisarek (a quality hard hitting defenseman) and picked up Gomez (an overpaid hot and cold scorer and Gionta (a skilled, but very small forward)...i am not sure what the game plan is for goaltending...either way, i don't really see any "chemistry" like i have seen over the years in Montreal...it kind of reminds me of the Leafs from a few years ago.

ZZZZZZZ : Personally I think the Habs did great with the guys they picked up.

Cammallerri can definitely produce without Iginla as witnessed in the Flames free for all,in the last 30 games.

Gionta is an awesome player when he's healthy.

Gomez is the wildcard here,if he can get his passion back and produce,the fans will love him .

Otherwise it could turn into a sideshow if he doesn't

Clipper : Leafs sign Rickard Wallin of Farjestad from the Swedish Elite League.

A former 6th round pick of Phoenix, he's played the last 2 years in the SEL with 17 G and 23 A in his first year and 18 G and 27 A in his second year. Both were 55 game seasons.

For those that weren't aware, SEL scoring doesn't give credit to second assists. That makes those numbers more impressive.

It remains to seen whether he can work in the NHL. Many late bloomers from Europe have difficulty.

You'd have to think, that one of Hanson, Tlusty, Kulemin, Grabovski and Wallin are going to be able to put up some numbers in the NHL.

Kardinal : If it's true, good luck. He's not big (he's the shortest 5'10" I've ever seen.....more like 5'8" or less), not particularly strong, but he's a hard worker along the boards. I don't see him as a #1 centre, more like a #2, and he's always been a winger when with Ottawa.

On the upside, maybe he'll bring Hillary along once in a while, like she used to show up in Ottawa. ;)

but i don't know if Comrie would be a #1 center...from what i recall, he didn't do much in Ottawa/Isles last season...in 63 games, he managed 27 points and was a -15...not sure if i am overly excited about him...in contrast, Antropov played 81 games, got 59 points (including 28 goals) and was a -14 (on a weak team in Toronto for most of last season).

dirtyjeffer : oh, i know...i doubt it will happen (i don't know if he would approach the Leafs, or if the Leafs are even interested in him any more), which is why i said it was a costly mistake...i believe Kypreos (Sportsnet) said it was a mistake when Moore was holding out...he pointed to the fact that the Leafs picked him up for nothing (claimed off waivers) and that no one wanted him...he mentioned that while he was producing well in TO, part of it was because he was in a position to be put front and center and play multiple roles, mainly because of the lack of "star players"...when he held out, Kypreos pointed to the fact that he will just be a 3rd or 4th liner on most other teams, and his production dropped because of it...in TO, he played on the first and second lines, was great in the face offs, played on the PK and PP...unfortunately, he didn't keep things in perspective and thought he was going to get big bucks somewhere else and be their star player...that wasn't the case before TO, and won't be the case on most other teams too.

but, i still like Moore, and wouldn't turn him down out of spite...if he can still help the team, i would sign him...he and Blake seemed to click.

Honestly I don't think the Leafs ATM have a "leader" on the squad worthy of the C yet.

In doing a bit of research, it turns out that a player in his CBA status (first NHL contract at 24 years old), can only be offered a 1 year entry level deal at league minimum. This means all the teams after Monster were pitching the exact same contract terms, and it really did come down to which team presented themselves the best. Kudos to Burke for landing this big fish.

HiVolt : I'm really happy about the Gustavsson signing. He's 24, so he's got a lot more experience than your normal draft picks against some good players.

I think its the first time in a few years we Leaf fans can be excited again for the upcoming season, with the defense much improved, which was clearly lacking the last few seasons and especially last year in which the Leafs were the worst defensive team in the league.

I hope Kaberle stays, and the defense will be pretty good.

Some of those can be fixed, but I don't think he's trying very hard. I know McKichan preaches some of that stuff pretty hard, and Raycroft didn't show any improvement while he was goalie coach, IMO.

Brownbay : Heh, yeah. I just find it odd that had Ferguson been the one who brought Finger in, shit would have hit the fan. But because Cliff did it, people seem to over look it.

There was no reason to sign Finger. The leafs would have been just fine without him. But there's a ton of stupid or rather, short sighted GM's out there. So while it may be hard, it's still definitely possible that we'd be able to move Finger.

Out of all of them though, I'd keep Van Ryan and White. White might no fit into Burke's model due to his size and the same with Van Ryan... But when Van Ryan wasn't hurt, he was pretty damn good.

Yes. Could see the departure of Kaberle though....

For record, I hope Kaberle stays.

I don't know about Kabs leaving now. Don't get me wrong, Beauchemin and Komisarek are awesome signings for a poor defensive team, but without Kabs, they don't have a puck moving defenceman. This team doesn't have too much difficulty scoring, but they certainly have addressed the defensive side of things. I think now that unless they get some sore of earth shattering offer, Kabs just might be staying.

And yes DJ, Beauchemin is a top 4 defenceman. Meaning the Leafs now have 3 of that high caliber of player on the blueline.

Found out about this from Millard's tweet. Amazing news for the Leafs. Beauchemin is solid defender. I'm said that he didn't stay in Anaheim, but he goes to the Leafs, so all things work out.

He's got a good shot and learnt a lot from Neidemayer. Can't wait to see him on the blue-line.

one player i would like to see is Jay Rosehill...6'3", 195 lbs, defense...played 70 games last year in the AHL, scored 7 goals, 8 assists, was a +4 and picked up 275 penalty minutes...now THAT is TRUCULENCE!

alamarco : Yes Fedorov is already gone to the KHL, which is why Washington was rumoured to be after Kovalev (though they signed Knuble instead).

Right now the current rumours has Kovalev going to the Avs, along with Tanguay. I don't really care about Kovalev, but the Avs made a big mistake when they let go of Tanguay earlier in his career. Both Tanguay and Hejduk formed a nice duo and both haven't played as good as they did when they were together.

Audiotech : Nope not the case. I was watching Quebec news and they were saying not to expect him back with the Canadiens. Mtl gave him an offer, him and his agent turned it down.

They actually had a petition going on to bring back Kovalev and Koivu today.

dirtyjeffer : it takes time to rebuild a team..."quick fixes" are what caused this mess in the first place...Burke is doing what was needed years ago...develop from the draft (Schenn and Kadri), and utilize some free agents and trades to fill gaps (Komisarek, Exelby, Orr)...the Leafs are already a better team with what they did on July 1st and draft day...there's still more to come, and don't worry, the Leafs have TONS of cap space, so getting someone else is still an option (although i don't know of any big names currently available)....hmmm...Kaberle for Tavares, straight up! ;)

I don't think you'll ever find a UFA that is underpaid, unless they are picked up late in the off-season. That said, some of the prices being paid are more sane than others (if talking about people making millions of dollars to play a game can ever be considered sane, and the jury is still out on that one).

LaZ3R : Grabovski was a solid signing... He's one of the fastest skaters on the team and is definitely someone to keep for now. Plus, he flipped off the Montreal crowd that one game when he got kicked out, so he has lots of passion for the game and Leafs :D

not sure what the difference is, but i am pretty sure he has to accept any trade...also, i don't think Binghampton will happen because if he isn't traded by end of today (PST), the Sens have to write a $4 million cheque to him...they pretty much already said, if they are paying the $4 million, he is staying where he is (unless they get an offer that is too good to pass up).

Kabby's play slipped a bit last year, but I'm sure he will rebound. He's an above average defenseman and two years with him at a reasonable price is good with me. I never wanted him traded.

I'm not surprised... He's underperformed and has a huge contract. I assume the Sens paid him his $4M bonus today, so he effectively cost them 14M for one season, lol...

Can I help him pack his bags? The guy was a ghost in the last two rounds of the playoffs this year, and the Wings have kids coming up that will develop into impact players. Maybe Helm will finally have his rookie season....

shaner : Chris Neil isn't all he's cracked up to be. The problem since Belak was traded away was the Leafs had "tough guys" who would always get their asses handed to them. Neil is one of those guys too. Much better to have a true heavyweight. We have enough guys who think they can fight.

Orr can play...he isn't there to give you 20 goals...he is there to help protect the other young players and keep people honest out there...last year, in many games, the Leafs got pushed around too much...you don't want Schenn and White fighting...that isn't going to "scare" anyone...you need to have someone the other team will have to answer to, should things go that way.

But, when one of the building blocks could have been had very, very cheaply (Bouwmeester), I think Burke really missed the boat on that one. JayBo is 25 years old. He and Schenn could be the blueline anchors for a decade.

I agree there was a risk that JayBo wouldn't have signed, and frankly we obviously don't know the back room shenanigans going on. Maybe JayBo asked to go to the Flames, being an Alberta boy and all, but still, it doesn't appear Burke even tried.

Instead of having press conferences announcing he's going to trade up to grab a pick nobody is ever going to give him, why not do something.

I'm all about patience. I want this team to be built right with a core of exceptional young players. JayBo could have been one of those. The Leafs cleared salary to give them room for guys like this. I'm even prepared to wait until next year when Nash and Kovy are UFA's. The Leafs may have $30 MILLION in cap space by that time.

Rebuilding the Leafs isn't a "one or two free agent signings" type deal at this point. The Leafs need time to grow as a team and plopping in a big money free agent onto such a team is a waste of time & talent IMO.

Hell, any smart UFA stays the hell away from Toronto for at least another year to see how well Burke can rebuild the team.

Give Burke a few years before saying that he's done nothing to improve the team, UFA's should not be seen as a panecea, remember the Leafs used to do that, look where it got them :huh:

i agree...while it would have been great to see Bowmeester in TO, that move is very risky, and in many cases, trading for the "rights" to a player doesn't work out...good job with Sutter pulling it off...the question is, does Phaneuf go and where?

I'm glad he didn't waive it as that's a crappy trade from Ottawa's end of things IMO. Penner is an over-paid under-achiever since he signed that deal with Edmonton and I'd rather not have to pay that much for that little in return.

I'll start off with a tasty tidbit that was talked about on Sportsnet earlier (as a possibility). Calgary sings Bowmeester. To clear cap space, they trade Phaneuf to Ottawa for Heatly.

This could be a potential jackpot for Ottawa. Get rid of a high priced player who doesn't want to play for them, and get a young solid defenseman in return. Pair him up with Cowen, and that is a defense to be reckoned with. And if Heatly though Clouston was "tough on him", I can't wait to see what he thinks of Sutter. Sutter will kick his ass if he gets out of line. :D
