any feedback on acanac free online PC, & torrent down please

Hi: I'm a teksavvy user. They started a new fee of 4$ to bypass bell throtling so I'm seriously considering to switch to acanac.

I want to know some feedbacks on the free online PC , the 100 GB online HD. and your experience on torrent downloading speed?

also if they have any bandwith limitation for a month usage.

Thanks

The $4 fee is NOT to bypass Bell throttling. This fee is for MLPPP to bond 2+ DSL lines together.

The effect that MLPPP has on Bell's throttling is just a side-effect.

Well, it also applies to any TSI user with a single line who wishes to use mlppp.

For the record, there's another large independent ISP that :

- supports mlppp, with no fees;
- offers unlimited bandwidth

...all for the same $29.95 a month as TSI.

Yes, Velcom. However if they get as many MLPPP users as TekSavvy does, they probably will either have to discontinue or start charging for MLPPP.

TekSavvy only ran into the troubles due to the number of MLPPP users they have. In fact, it's probably safe to say that they have more MLPPP users than any other organization in the entire world; they hit resource limits on Juniper's hardware that nobody else has ever hit before.

you're rigth but for me as user that is the effect (side or not) I'm using a single link mlppp only for the reason to bypass the bell throtling.

If bell dont throtle any more I don't need the mlppp.
until now teksavvy find the way to give me the real full service with no charging me the mlppp single link.

In my case the option are:

a not really full service btwn 16:00 to 02:00 for 30 $
or
the real full service for 34 $

I think will be a good thing to keep the single link for free, but it's only my opinion, as I bougth the hardware for.

Now I'm considering the acanac offer for 19$ a month for one year and the same 34$ for the full service for the other years as an option.

They offer an other way to bypass the throtling via a online PC. before I switch I will analize the option.

I bring many people to teksavvy, I help them with the switching process and them inform me about the change TODAY one day before !!!. I don't think it's correct to act this way.
If them dont consider me, I have to look outside.
I was very comfortable with the service but in this way, maybe I will bring my recomended people with me.

I'm with acanac, I use their SSH service to bypass throttling on a daily basis, it works perfect.

They didn't notify you one day before the service stopped working, since it wasn't an officially existing service.

They notified everybody one day before a new service was being offered.

There's a pretty big difference there. Discontinuing a service that never officially existed does't really require special efforts. Would have been nice, sure. But shouldn't be a big deal.

A couple points about Acanac from an Acanac user:

- the Acanac tunneling solution makes you "unconnectable" on torrents, ie, the same effect as if you don't have your ports forwarded correctly

- the new Acanac tunnel solution does not keep IP logs... some might find this appealing, either for p2p or for browsing

- Acanac claims that getting MLPPP working is next on the to-do list after getting Torix fully working

Hi Guspaz:

I look at the facts more than the semantic issue.
I never said nothing about "stopping" services.

officially or not, side effect or not, the fact is: the mlppp was a way to still having a full service as contracted with them. I appreciate that. that was THE major reason to switch with them. If not I still with AEI, in my experience very good service too. ( I know you dont like them too much, but I have nothing against them, my connection works a little better than with teksavvy, but the throtling was a major reason to change).

they notify me one day before the service CHANGE politics of charge that affect my use considerably, if you prefers.

I have to say too that your tomato/mlppp fw works very well.

I'm aware that they have the right to change what they charge for, but by the way I have too the right to look for the best solution for me.

Teksavvy still a good option if you have a multilink mlppp conection like your.

Acanac, also offers no bandwith limit and a 100gb free online HD.
I'm only looking for other options. It's only that.

Please don't feel offended by my post.

Thanks jazdi: have you try the free online PC as a solution to evade the throtling?.

The tech told me that I could install utorrent there (or the linux equivalent) and get a very fast download speed (25 MB/s) without no effect on the bandwith use.

It's too beauty full to be true? or that could be an option?

I don't believe the online PC has a torrent client. I did a couple years ago, but I believe it was disabled because it was using too many resources.

But you can tunnel using the online PC (nx.acanac.net) or its new replacement (tunnel.acanac.net) to bypass the throttle, and it does work. But like I said before, it makes you unconnectable, so sometimes it can take a little longer to connect to peers, especially if there aren't many.

Someone should probably install rtorrent on the online PC. I haven't tried it, but being a command line app, it probably uses little to no resources.

on the free online pc you can't install anything cause you need a root access and there is none on the free version but you can use the tunnelier without the online pc the only thing is that you have to request it to be able to connect through the tunnelier

You don't necessarily need root access to run your own apps, you just can't use the package management system to install apps system-wide.

When I was with acanac last year, I installed Java onto the online PC in my user directory and ran Azureus. The OPC is behind a firewall so it was outgoing connections only, but sweet jesus was it fast. 20MBytes upload speed, faster download. I am not shitting you.

It would kill the process after 20 mins so I wrote a bash script to keep restarting it until my torrents had finished.

Dunno if you can still do that though.

There are actually 2 tunnels available at Acanac, free that is.
One uses the Free Online PC and you can tunnel into it from any IP address. Also has Terminal and SFTP.

The latest one doesn't use the Free Online PC and can be accessed only from an Acanac IP address and uses the DSL username and password.

Both work really well, on a test torrent like openoffice.org you can expect around 500k download speeds. (5056/800 profile)

No bandwidth limits either. Works great.

That is ok or too good to be true?

Could you really download torrents with that at 20 mb/s without affecting your bandwith or being throtled by Bell ?

you won't be able to download at that speed, because your personal connection is limited to something close to 5mb/s

The Demo you were referring to was the Beta for the Paid Version that was to be released after testing.

The Free Online PC and the New Tunnel are limited to your Available Bandwidth. The new tunnel is the way to go IMHO if you just want to get around throttling.

Here's some info on the Paid Version.

Downloading at those speeds is possible, but getting it from the server to your PC is another story. Limited again by your Available Bandwidth, on a 5056/800 profile you're looking around 500k from the server to your PC.

Don't get the impression on the Free Online PC you'll be able to run torrent clients, as you can't.
The interface is pretty sluggish!!
