[Newsgroups] Free Usenet Server - 1 week - 200 days ret.

said by CheaperNewsAdmin :
We just turned on a new bank of servers and are hoping to push 10-20
gigabits of test traffic this week. These servers have 200 days of
articles, both binaries and text.

Please give us a hand by testing things out -

The server is:

stresstest.cheapernews.com

No username/password is required.

SSL is enabled and you should be able to make at least 20 connections
per host.

Sorry, we don't support posting.

We may have a few few-minute outages during the course of the week as
we try different server and/or load balancer configurations, but our plan
is to keep the service up until and through July 4th.

Thanks for helping us out!

Cool, about to try it. For 4 bucks a month, I might buy in for a few months!

I tried SSL first, it didn't work.

I went back to normal and it worked. Getting really slow speeds though.

Not worth the 4 bucks!

Getting good speeds here. Looks like some nicely priced plans if you take into account the speed cap on plans. Another option for people.

Nice, very fast, thank you for the heads up.

Looks interesting, I like how Astraweb has driven down prices, usenet never used to be so competitive.

For years it was the same old pricing schemes and in a short span it has become much cheaper and retention is rising.

Just wanted to say that their server must have been hiccuping or they might have been playing around with something, because it was only down for a short while, then back up and still working great.

I was going to sign up for this, but then Astraweb just posted their $96 deal and for a couple of dollars more you get Astraweb, SSL, server farms, retention etc.

They also seem to have a 1meg download speed limit on all of their accounts. I only have a measly 6meg dsl line and that would greatly impact how fast I could download.

With 20 connections going this downloads over twice as slow as my Astraweb account. Also, was unable to connect via SSL port 563 with the Unison reader.

SSL didn't work here either by the way.

Anyone sign up with them after their trial. I e-mailed them, their response was slow, about 2 days late i think.

Still would give them a try - wanted to check if anyone else is subscribed

Their retention around the 180-200 day mark doesn't seem very good. I had to use my Astraweb account for fills.
