22 Mbps Ultra - Do I need a DOCSIS 3 modem?

Got the same flyer here in Powder Springs touting the Ultra and Extreme 50 tiers. Question is, do I need a D3 modem to make use of those speeds or will my SB5100 work at those speeds?

Going from 16 to 22 is an additional $10 a month.

Re: 22 Mbps Ultra

Some have said(and shown) Ultra working on a SB51xx series modem.
You really should get a new D3 modem if you are going to get Ultra.

I second the D3 modem. Go for the Motorola SB6120. It'll be definitely worth it and is future proof for the next upgrades past 22/5 and 50/10.

Yeah, even though it downloaded the correct config

d11_m_sb5100_ultra_c01.cm

it seems like am still capped at 16. Guess I am off to call Comcast.

Well getting a D3 modem is the best choice for the future, and if your area is D3.. You will see less slowdowns during peak hours because of bonded channels spreading the speeds between them.

Instead of calling Comcast, why not stay here and get to talking to Comcast Steve? »SteveTeow

From what I've read, he's had plenty of success helping people get their connection setups straight if they're screwed up.

Plus, you should go for a D3 modem. Like madden says, it'll really help.

The lady on the phone was clueless as to whether or not I am in a D3 area. Is Comcast renting D3 modems?

Well calling and asking will only tell you. Because i cant say for certain they are. but there is D3 in certain areas in GA. So give them a call.

Obviously you have D3 available if the Ultra tier is being sold therefore, your market will have D3 modems available.

Guess I will have to get them to roll a truck if I want a rental modem.

Or pick one up from Amazon.

Thanks for the info guys/gals.

Ultra can actually be done on a D2 modem, but it may not be good for the sub and the other subs that share a segment due to the increased potential for capacity/congestion issues.

You shouldn't need a truck roll for a modem swap, just go down to your local Comcast office (the location of offices that handle equipment swaps are listed on the website). They can handle the swap and upgrade your account in person. It took about 5 mins for me.

My local office never has any new equipment, only the truck guys do. My DVR and modem were both used from the local office. Doubt they even know what a DOCSIS 3.0 modem is. When I had problems with my DVR, the truck guy came with a brand spanking new model unwrapped.

After stopping by local Comast store and picking up a shiny new 6120 this is what I am getting now.

Pulling videos from dl.tv @ 2.9MB

It's all good now!
