[connectivity] forced to reactivate.

My Sis called saying her granddaughter was on her pc yesterday. Today she turned it on and the only page that comes up is »https://reactivate verizon.net/launch/(some type of symbol here neither of us before. Does this sound legit? Granddaughter is 9 years old. And the last page in the history was agame.com. Computer is running Vista and not networked. Favorites are still there but clicking on them brings up the above named page. Before I go to her house to check it out has anyone else heard of this before? I am competent in pc/cable broadband repair, but never played around with DSL. Even though the page starts with https, I question if it really is a secure page. Because of the last symbol (no not a tilde) it is impossible for me to type the address in my pc. She said it was a line that went down, then right and down again. I thought I would ask before I reactivate this for her. Thanks in advance.
Jim

Could you possibly get a screenshot of the page for us? What does it say in general?

Thanks,

Sorry I took so long to answer. Had to go to the VA hospital. All she told me was that it said -welcome to Verizon. Click here to activate. I asked her if she was sure the address started with https, she said it did. She has Norton AV on her PC. I am going down there this afternoon(wed) to look at it. If it seems suspicious I'll verify the page with Verizon. It's just that I have never heard of this happening and she has been on Verizon dsl for the past four years with no lapse in service. If I can not figure it out, I'll take a pic of the screen and attach it. I'm on my laptop, not her pc. Either way I will reply so if I do figure out the problem it may help someone else.

I just got back, I confirmed the Activate page was legit. I went through the process and all is well; sort of. Her AV program has been expired for four months. She has PC Confidential on her pc and a icon for something called shredder. Uninstall in control panel does not get rid of it. I ran out of time so tomorrow I am installing a AV program, do a scan and then find out the registry keys that need deleted +other files that need deleted.
I have no idea how her account was deactivated by her grandaughter. I found no info with a search. I suspect it is trojan/spyware/virus related. Hopefully I can get this all cleaned up for her. I can not tell you how many times I have preaced to her about the AV program and windows update. I installed Firefox and instructed her to only use that browser from now on, especially when her grandkids come over. If I find out anything new I will update.

Symantec has a removal tool you can use to remove Norton Antivirus if you don't want to use it any more. First use the delete of the program from add/remove, reboot, then get the removal tool for her version of the program from the Symantec website and use the tool a couple of times to get rid of the rest of it. Make sure also the folders for Norton are gone too.

I have had good luck with Total Uninstall from Martau.com. it has 30 free trial. The IT dept. at work recommended it.

I don't have that modem/router but I assume the only way to get back to the walled garden is to do a hard reset. Do you think that is likely?

Is router accessible physically? Is the web interface password protected?
