is there a southern CA Roadrunner outage this afternoon?

Just to be sure, there is a major outage going on in southern CA. I was on hold with TS for over an hour and both he and an online chat technician agreed there is a problem causing no connectivity or very sloooow connectivity on their server side. (I'm writing this from another provider)

Just to confirm with evry1 as I'm surprised its not mentioned here (yet).

Had the same exact problems last evening. Slow connects (huge packet losses) or no connecting at all.

Seems to be happening again this afternoon, you're right.

90042 here

Yep. I was told it was affecting about 3/4 of the Los Angeles area.

Husband was complaining about latency last night, then it went down completely a while after midnight, was okay this morning, then ~1:30pm went down the crapper.

This is what I'm getting on our 10/1 turbo, after a number of tries where the test wouldn't even complete.

Updated speed test, seems to be back to "normal" here.

Back to normal here too but it was back to normal yesterday morning as well.

I wonder if it'll start getting bad again this afternoon and into the evening like it did the past two days.

Well, my year renewal is coming up in August. Does anyone know if complaining to their retention department still works?? I've been getting RR Standard for 34.95 the passed 2 years and don't mind an outage once in a while as long as I don't have to pay higher than that. I'll be pissed if they make me pay the $45 this time around and call my bluff - wish we got FIOS.

Mine's bad too. In Thousand Oaks. Also, is anyone in the LA area able to get an LA server on speedtest.net? It selects San Diego for me...

Same in Encino 91316. getting very slow speeds.

Same 1mbit result as above. It most likely is a Level3 issue being that the speedtest run on rr servers works flawlessly anything outside of that realm is squased to 1~2mbit for this guy. Just Spoke with tech support and the conclusion he came up with was that I had to reset my router after telling him numerous times that I already had. These guys are useless and you just KNOW they know what's going on but can't tell you. Either that or they just don't and twc is simply broken.

Was happening as far out as Redlands today... I was almost as slow on the downstream as I was on the upstream for most of the day.

The speedtest server to SanDiego at Speedtest.net is not slow. It is the Los Angeles speedtest.net server at Fastsoft that is bogus and inflated to give LA users the ILLUSION they have a fast connection when they do not. TW users in congested areas using speedtest.net LA server will get really high download speeds when in fact they are lucky if they are really getting half their provisioned download. I laugh when people post their speedtest.net results using the Fastsoft LA server. What a joke, and they really believe it. They could report 30mbps down and people would believe/report they are getting that.

Now that the Fastsoft LA test site is not available people run a speedtest from a different site and see their poor download and wonder what has happened. Nothing has happened. You always had poor download in the evening but the LA speedtest site at Fastsoft INFLATED your download.

Run a few tests using a local speakeasy or download a large file from an ftp site that has a big pipe. That will give you a more accurate range.

I had an outtage yesterday, but resetting my modem actually seemed to fix that.

Had an small outtage and big slowdnw just a little while ago again (at 3:15am-4:10am). Was out for a few minutes at first, then slow. Actually in the middle of downloading some things and was using all my bandwidth at 1.2Mbps+ (10mbps) before it went down, then dropped to a staggering 20-25Kbps (150-200kbps) or so, but now seems to be getting back to normal.

Zip code is 90034. On the border of Culver City & LA...right near the Sony Picture Studios.

Re: is there a southern CA Roadrunner outage this afternoon?

Yeah I noticed same thing this morning same times. Rebooting modem for me didn't help it cleared up on it's own. I'm in Granada hills. I noticed when it wasn't working. Simple trace to yahoo would go out to TX then to CO before heading back to CA. Once it cleared up it would only stay in CA routers. Maybe router went down with RR.

Resetting Modem fixes problem is a TERRIBLE SOLUTION !!

I've had 3 prolonged outages in the past 2 weeks here in Linda Vista (San Diego). What is frustrating is that each time, resetting the cable modem ENDED the outage.

How much longer would the outage have been if I didn't reset the cable modem?

If resetting the modem is required, the shouldn't RR do that remotely?

I wasted all that time twiddling my thumbs waiting for service to return...really -- applications that run even when I'm not home got stuck & had to wait till I reset the modem. That just should not be the solution!!!

It does not sound like an OUTAGE! it sounds like YOU have an individual issue.

The solution is that you call and get it fixed.

If your modem isn't communicating with the CMTS, how do you expect a remote reboot to work?

I am in west hills area and wondering if this problem still going on or fixed? I am thinking of switching to road runner to take advantage of the package deal.

Is this all over socal or just isolated places? I been considering switching but now having second thoughts about it.

Santa Monica Too

@rr.com

I'm in Santa Monica too, and I've been getting very very slow DL speeds and incredibly slow ping times as well (15% of my pings to Google and Yahoo timeout) just starting yesterday afternoon (and it seemed to be better this morning, but it's been slow again starting around 1pm).

I wonder if there is something going on locally yesterday and today. I'll call - if I get through I'll let you know what they say.

Re: is there a southern CA Roadrunner outage this afternoon?

Okay, I just got off the phone with Road Runner tech support, and they said that starting "last night" (7/14/09) there has been a "slow to complete outage" in the Los Angeles area including Santa Monica.

They currently don't have an estimated time to repair.

Suck. I'll keep us updated if I hear anything.

Beverly Hills here. I was told my TWC that the problem is an accidental fiber cut in the area, possibly by a construction crew. The traffic is being routed to other networks but the demand is saturating the capacity of those networks, causing some people to have intermittent/slow connectivity. I hope they get this resolved soon, alot of people are depending on the network here...

Re: is there a southern CA Roadrunner outage this afternoon?

Speed and latency seem to be back to acceptable levels sometime around 5-6 pm today here near Eagle Rock.

Most websites were very slow and timing out for most of the morning today.

Here's hoping the problems won't come back again. They started surfacing yesterday near the early evening, disappeared a few hours laters, and then come back this morning.

I got disconnected a few times overnight and during the late morning and afternoon. Speeds did seem slower too.

Last night, I noticed my e-mails to RR.com are having issues on my friend's FIOS Linux box:
mailq showed:
EA83B1C2470 2237 Wed Jul 15 18:56:43 foobar@zimage.com
(host hrndva-smtpin02.mail.rr.com[71.74.56.244] refused to talk to me: 421 4.7.1 - Connection refused - - Too many concurrent connections from source IP)

Also, I seem to get randomly disconnected on it with SSH sessions. I have to use another SSH account on another Linux box (DSLextreme) to three.

Rowland Heights, CA here.

Been having intermittent to complete outage since mid last week. Many calls to tech support did not help and ended us telling me there was a major outage. Why didn't tell me in the beginning without going through all the troubleshooting steps, everytime?

I tried to power cycle the modem and see if that fix the issue. Every power cycle leave the modem with all solid lights, and blinking from time to time. Nothing yet....I hope it will be fixed asap.
