Re: 900-MHz spectrum analyzer

Hi,

This might be my queue to jump in here...

fjonker is completely correct in pointing out which features Wi-Spy 900x has that AirView9 does not. I would further emphasize the points made about the waterfall (spectral) view and recording data. These are very important features that are essential in any kind of serious troubleshooting application. If you are working with WISP transmissions, you're going to need the ability analyze the data you collect in better detail. Without the ability to record, playback and adjust the time frame, you will not be able to catch everything that is going on, especially intermittent sources of interference.

Thanks! I'm definitely going with the Wi-Spy. I've heard that the Air View software is horrible and is severely limited (their forum is full of complaints).

It might only be $75 but it would be money (and time) wasted on an inferior product that wont do what I need it to do. $199 seems like a good deal for the real thing.

Hello,

The Ubiquiti Airview9 is currently only available with the internal PCB antenna. According to their forum (»www.ubnt.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12464) the Airview9-EXT is scheduled to be available in 2 weeks.

As a WISP I would think that having an external antenna would be desirable as it allows much easier determination of where interference is originating from.

The Wi-Spy spectrum analyzers include the following features not available in the Airview:
- Ability to save your data for off-site analysis
- 3D view so it's really easy to see what's going on
- Waterfall view - very handy to see a history of transmissions
- RP-SMA connector - easier to find antennas for than the MMCX on the AirView.

For more info see the forums at AirView (»www.ubnt.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=21) and at Metageek (»www.metageek.net/support/forum) or the Canadian website at »www.wi-spy.ca.

I hope this helps.

@frontiernet.net

Anybody see the new WiSpy? They say it has a range of 862 to 928 MHz and has a RPSMA antenna. How does this compare to Ubiquiti's tool? Anybody use the other wispys? I think I want to get it but I'm still researching.
