Any maytag washer repair men in the house?

So i've been fighting w/ my washing machine as of last night. I started it up and it began to fill so i came upstairs to let it proceed as normal. Half an hour later I head downstairs to move what i expect to be clean clothes into the dryer only to find that the lights are out. "Hmmm odd" i say to myself.
I check the breaker and it has flipped so i turn it back on and head to the washing machine. I then find that it's full of water and not dong anything. So i move the nob to reset (basically fills it w/ more water and continues w/ the cleaning process) It fills up then sits. No agitation, no nuttin.
So today i pull the top cover off to get to the insides. Everything looks normal to me. I thought maybe my lid switch was shot so i pulled it out and tested it for continuity. Everything in the switch is behaving like it should when open/closed Damn! So i think maybe the switch just isn't being fully pressed so I tape a roll of pennies together and tape the switch in the lid closed position. No luck.
I attached the service manual i used to 'diagnose' it. Page 83 has the switch on it and how it functions. I'm not real electronically inclined, but i'm guessing that if the fuse was blown that my Ohm/Continuity test would of failed. So...... any thoughts?
Oh it's a Maytag LAT9416aae.

How much cash should i drop on this thing it's prolly 10 or so years old.

Been in this business for about 35 years. The most common problem I see is that little check switch on the lid switch assembly goes bad. You can't rely on a continuity check on that switch. It might check ok, but fail under load. And make sure when you test anything, like the fuse or a switch, to pull off one wire lead. You might just want to replace that switch. It's only a couple of bucks. It doesn't have to be Maytag specific. Probably get one at any electronics parts store.

The tripped breaker leads me to believe there is more than a switch issue.

I'm assuming that the washer doesn't normally trip the breaker.

Well at first glance, either your model # is actually LAT9614aae or you have the wrong manual

If it is the correct manual:

Per page 82 regarding the function of the lid switch, the switch controls water fill as well as agitate and spin. So since you can fill, your issue is not the lid switch.

Per Page 65 after it fills a pressure switch turns off the water and routes power to the motor, so I would be investigating that switch and/or the motor.

Also per Page 139 it lists what else to check for the unit filling but not agitating.

It's a little concerning that a major appliance and the room lighting are on the same circuit. Is it a 15 or 20 amp breaker? If it is a 15 amp breaker, it probably has 14 gauge wire which is too small for a major appliance. Line voltage drops over distance and undersized wire exacerbates the situation. Low voltage can be damaging to motors over time.

BornLoser - I'll give the switch a try. Called the local applicance store and they have one. It'll prolly run me 20-30 bucks. I pulled it off the washer so i'm not quite sure what you mean by pulling off the wire/leads. It's a molex style plug and i checked the continuity via the page in my next post. Just seems odd being that i tested it w/ my meter and continuity seemed to work both open and closed, but alas, you know more than I do in this field so i'll pick one up and see how it works.

Nunya, Waterburg. I agree that it's odd that the breaker tripped. I've lived in my house for 3 years w/ this washer/dryer and it hasn't ever caused a problem. I believe it's on a 20amp breaker (have to check) When it happened i didn't have a ton of stuff on. 1 light, my switch, dsl modem, and just the washer. (didn't even have the dryer going) Which is why i'm wondering if something in the washer blew and threw the breaker.

Marcer. Thats the best manaul i could find As far as the water fill gauge i believe it's working because if i change the load of the washer from medium to large it fills up more and stops where one would believe large woudl stop at. Same for Extra large or whatever it is called. As for other reasons why it might not be agitating i'll definately check page 139. I didn't make it though the entire manual. it's a real PITA trying to read a 180+ page pdf on a smart phone while working(cursing) at your washing machine.

Thank you all for the tips/advice

oh and for what it's worth this is how i tested the lid switch
How a good switch ohms with an ohm meter:

Lid open/at rest, continuity between Machine and Line, continuity between motor and neutral.

Lid closed/activated, continuity between machine, motor and line together and nothing to neutral.

Well Put on a new lid switch and held it as if the lid were closed.
It filled the tub (as expected) but stopped there. I stood there for another minute or so waiting and i could hear the dial on the washer click so the timer is advancing. Any other suggestions?

With everything to the point that the motor should be running, you need to check and see if the motor is even getting power. If so, blown motor, if no power then we have to troubleshoot further.

Deal. I'll pull the entire case off tonight and head for the motor and see if i can get zapped.

If you manually advance the timer with the lid closed, will it agitate or spin at a different part of the cycle or on a different wash cycle?

If so, it's probably a bad timer contact. If not, it's probably the motor or a relay for the motor if there is one. That's when I'd start to check if the motor is getting voltage and still not turning as already suggested. If the motor's not getting voltage when it should be running, I'd have to suspect the timer or a relay for the motor.

if the dial moves after the filling stops (i can see it move and hear it click) Is it safe to assume that the timer is working? Haven't had a chance to check the motor for voltage yet.

The timer may be rotating, but a dirty contact could be preventing the motor (or motor relay) from getting voltage.

The biggest reason I mentioned checking the motor voltage is the fact of the breaker tripping. Maybe something went poof in the motor.

Power to the motor.
Anyone want to buy a 120lb Maytag branded paper weight? (with a good lid switch)

I found a replacement washing machine on craigslist as I can't rationalize dropping $100+ bucks on a motor when i can just get a different machine.

Thanks for all the advice and what to check for.
