Re: Cabling(between wall jack and modem)

Good thought, Norman...

I will replace the wall plate just to eliminate potential problem.

Thanks...never gave that a thought

What do you use between wall and modem?
The same CAT 3 cable as shipped with the modem four years ago.
Have a cat 3 (two pair)from NID(and splitter) to a two gang wall jack (voice and data). Wall to 660 bridged modem to Linksys router. Running 2 wired XP's and 1 wireless. All stable. Have replaced modem twice in 2 1/2 yrs per customer service, before cabling issues.

Thoughts and suggestions appreciated
I originally set up with a Westell WireSpeed B90 36R516 bridged modem. Had the original (~40-year-old) quad station wire from the station protector to the wall jack (about a 40 foot run). And an old 19 gauge copper drop (original) from the pole. That was back in February, 2001.

Since then, SBC has replaced the drop (now a three-pair CAT 3), and station protector (with a proper NID) while troubleshooting voice problems. And I added a whole house DSL splitter at the NID (big gray all-weather box; NID is too small, and no sleds), and replaced the quad wire with CAT 3 (DSL on orange/white pair). And a new Siemens SpeedStream 4100 modem.

Replacing the quad-wire with CAT three did not change the attenuation significantly (less than 0.5 dB; too small to count it as a change).

However, at 9,156 feet from the DSLAM, my line really isn't marginal. For your 23,000 foot distance, you can use all the help that you can get from good wiring. I wonder if the contacts in the wall jack can lose their tension over time?

You got smart coils extended reach. It also helps the line if its on an adsl2+ card. It doesn't work or has lots of trouble if its on the 1st version of adsl.

Your right Scooper and for several years I couldn't get service either.

About 1 1/2 ago Embarq installed some type of equipment that allowed an increase.

Maybe Embarq_Joey can explain

Thanks to all who commented...

Just a note to thank Embarq_joey for his time and effort in checking out my line.

At about 23.5K from CO, we're doing the best it can.

What a great resource, this board and its members, and to have Embarq_Joey taking the time to cruise messages and offer his help.

Thanks to all

michael

you are still not syncing at full rate, which tells me that there is other line trouble. You need a tech out. IM embarq_joey your info.

1st I'd upgrade if you can to 3.0 or 5.0 if your using 3 computers at same time. Next anything is good between wall and modem as long as its under 20 ft as far as line cords go otherwise use a cat 3 line cord to play it safe.
I believe your trouble may be between the splitter and wall jack if your voice and data are split and still running together through a cat 3 2 pr wire there could be cross or bleed over in that wire. Make sure the data is hooked only to that one jack and doesn't continue to other jacks. Also no other lines hooked in nid either to data side of splitter.
It would be best if a cat 5 or cat 3 wire ran from splitter to data jack only for best results. These are fixes that I've made and all have worked depends on situation and whether you live in an apt complex or a house as to what can be done. If you live in apts try an extra filter on the voice side to your phone yes I know its already splittered but the bleed of the phone can cause issues with speed through the same line by adding a filter helps reduce noise coming from the phone.
Also the modem is probably good they like to waste money on shipping them out when 90% of the time its not the problem. Your cable loop also may need conditioned or even the splitter may be bad.Oh and older model linksyses have had issues make sure your checking through the modem only when doing your tests.

My dsl is split at the NID. From there I used a cat5e cable to pull dsl on one pair and another voice extension on another pair in the same cable to a dual port box/jack. DSL line on one side and voice on the other. This cat5e run is about 18’ from the NID to the jack. Not ideal probably, but I have no issues.

From the dsl jack I use a regular, premade cat3 phone patch cord, 2 pair cable into a surge protector and the same kind of cable straight into the modem from the surge protector

They have sent me replacement modems twice, though they were never the problem, both times it was my dslam profile that needed rebuilding for some reason. I have never had any noticeable issues with line speed/quality that didn’t trace back to another router up stream.

I should probably also state that my speed is 768k plan. This may matter; I’m not sure.

Somebody (not you) is fishing.

My DSL is a splitter in the NID, using 2 pair telephone cable that I got at Radio Shack, to a standard phone jack, then using a standard RJ11 phone cable from jack to modem. Has worked fine since July 2000.

edit 3:30 - Oh - and I'm on 3.0M down, 640K up - and I get my full speed.

Three times (twice in last 4 mos) 1.5 down/512up has dropped to about 800dwn and 26kup.

None of the normal checks changed or revealed anything. Call to customer service resulted in changing out the cable between wall jack and modem. ("New cables" from modem exchanges listed below.) Each time, the service was restored to normal, about 1.46 dwn and 460 up. CS Rep says..."those cables go bad"

Questions:

What do you use between wall and modem?

Have/Do you experience same issues?

Have a cat 3 (two pair)from NID(and splitter) to a two gang wall jack (voice and data). Wall to 660 bridged modem to Linksys router. Running 2 wired XP's and 1 wireless. All stable. Have replaced modem twice in 2 1/2 yrs per customer service, before cabling issues.

Thoughts and suggestions appreciated

Thanks,

Michael
