| [General] ATA and VoIP questions
I'm new to VoIP and trying to learn as much as I can before I go ahead and switch from the overpriced landline.
I realize you need a ATA device to connect to a VoIP provider, but I'm wondering if I buy and use my own ATA device can I use this ATA device with services like VoicePulse and VOIPo? Or can I ONLY use the ATA phone devices they provide?
Thanks. |

Thanks. It varies, a lot.
VOIPo does not allow you to bring your own devices anymore. At least that's what they tell us. Not sure about VoicePulse.
Other providers like future-nine or callcentric do allow you to use your own adapter.
And the third type - there are a couple providers who will allow you to use your own adapter but lock you out of it. Teleblend and phonepower are the two I can remember. |

| reply to black5551 Depends on provider.
Viatalk, Future9, Callcentric Phonepower to name a few all allow you to bring you own ATA. (Phonepower does lock it as long as you have service with them.)
Packet8, voipo, and vonage require you use the supplied ATA.
Not sure about voicepulse. |

@comcast.net | reply to black5551 Thanks for the info. Do you know any good places to buy new ATA devices compatible with the VoIP providers you mentioned? (Those providers who accept them anyway).
Thanks again. |

| PAP2T are common along with Grandstream models. Amazon seems to sell the pap2t at a fair price. I think Future9 will sell you one flat out. Viatalk doesn't officially sell them but if you get service and don't return the unit its $50.
Have heard of cheap knock off pap2 being sold on ebay so watch it. They either never work or die within a few weeks. |

| reply to black5551 Personally being new to VoIP I would recommend you use an ATA that is configured by whatever provider you use for your first time. Using your own device can save a few bucks but can also add alot of headaches if you don't know much about the settings etc.
Just a recommendation. |

| reply to black5551 When I wanted to get my feet wet with VOIP and see how it was for me. I ordered a PAP2T from Amazon and a Pay as you go account from Future Nine. It was a great decision and gave me confidence in VOIP.
If you can order from Amazon, they usually have a new PAP2T-NA available for about $50 with free shipping and no sales tax to most states. -- "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use." |

broadvoice.com allows you to bring your own device. their plans and service are pretty good as well. |

| reply to black5551 If you sign up with Future-Nine (can be a PAYG account) you can get a very good deal on a PAP2T that is already configured to work with their system, it should be immediate plug and play. It will NOT be locked, you can configure it to another provider or tweak the settings (or set the second line to another provider), but at least Line 1 will be pre-optimized for F9. |

@comcast.net | reply to black5551 Thanks for the help guys.
It looks like F9 would charge $25 for porting my current landline number, is this correct? Thanks. |

Just see which provider suits your needs best then see if you can use your ATA. If not then I'm 99 percent sure you can find help here. |

| reply to black5551 If you want to take a look, CallCentric has config instructions for many ATA's:
You could set up a free account with them ("IP Freedom") and freely call other CallCentric customers, AND also freely call customers of many other Voip services through SipBroker.
