Unable to view "HD" TV streams on 7MBPS

I just activated Qwest DSL 7MBPS service at my new home. I previously had Comcast 6 MBPS service which usually topped out at 4.5-5MBPS on speed tests. With that service I was able to watch HD TV episode streams from abc.com, hulu.com, etc. with virtually no problem. With my Qwest service I am getting 5.0-5.5 MBPS on speed tests (higher "raw" speed than my Comcast connection), but HD streams from the same sites are unwatchably choppy. I've noticed that ping latency is quite high, no less than 75 ms to virtually any site I've pinged, and average 100 ms. Is this the problem? I admit I don't recall doing many pings from my Comcast modem because I never really had problems, so I can't compare.

As I'm new to DSL, I'm reading about the 32 ms interleaving and wonder whether it's worth trying to get that turned off--has anyone seen improvement in video streatming with that fix? I can post my modem stats (SNR/attenuation) later after I get home from work if that is helpful.

Re: Unable to view "HD" TV streams on 7MBPS

I had the same problem here in Colorado. Streaming netflix to my xbox 360, HD would shut off and downrez to SD with my Qwest 7meg service. Switched to Comcast 6meg service, netflix streams HD no problem. I didn't try turning off interleave though, so I wonder if that would help?

try manually entering dns. 205.171.3.65 and 205.171.2.65. or you can try open dns/dydns.

I've got both. Gotta decide which to keep. Supposed to be comparable. What do you think? Which of these results is better?

Speed Test Results:
JAVA test to MegaPath, SanFran.: Comcast Cable, 8 Mbps / 756 Kbps

JAVA test to MegaPath, SanFran.: Qwest DSL, 7 Mbps / 1 Mbps (Thats what the sales guy said. 1 Mbps upload speed.)

Joe looks like you're setup for a 1.5 Mbps connection not 7. With 7 Mbps connection you should be seeing 5.5-6.2Mbps actual speed. Your upload speed is spot on though for Qwest.

Re: Qwest 7Mbps vs Comcast 8 Mbps

Nope, not 1.5 Mbps download. Qwest speed tests out at 5 Mbps to Minneapolis. But only 1 or sometimes 2 Mbps to San Fran. I'm paying for 7 Mbps. It seems that the train speed (upload) is about 875 kbps. The sales guy at Qwest didn't really know and was just saying 1 Mbps upload. Turns out that the Comcast upload IS 1 Mbps.

Re: Qwest 7Mbps vs Comcast 8 Mbps

Hey there, this is Brian with Qwest. I ran across your post here, and would like to offer my help with getting your Qwest DSL speed running properly. If you are paying for 7M speed, and getting less than 1.5M, there has to be a problem somewhere.

If you would like my help on this, please send me an e-mail to TalkToUs@Qwest.com, and put my name in the subject line.

Thanks,

B

he might be partially right. usually upload is 896k or 1M for older (grandfathered) accounts.
