The 10 highest-earning American athletes +

As much as we deify our Athlete/Entertainers, I thought it would be interesting to discuss how much they make...vs. how much we make. I hold no grudges against them (I ain't mad at them), they earned every penny as in a capitalistic society they are only taking in what the market will bare. It's the fans that drink the nasty beer, and wear the child-slave made sneakers and such that allow for this otherwise obscene income:

1). Tiger Woods; $7,737,626 in Salary/winnings + $92,000,000 in Endorsements = $99,737,626 Total for the YEAR.

2). Phil Mickelson; $6,350,356 in Salary/winnings + $46,600,000 in Endorsements = $52,950,356 Total for the YEAR.

3). LeBron James; $14,410,581 in Salary/winnings + $28,000,000 in Endorsements = $42,410,581 Total for the YEAR.

4). Alex Rodriguez; $33,000,000 in Salary/winnings + $6,000,000 in Endorsements = $39,000,000 Total for the YEAR.

5). Shaquille O’Neal; $20,000,000 in Salary/winnings + $15,000,000 in Endorsements = $35,000,000 Total for the YEAR.

6). Kevin Garnett; $24,750,000 in Salary/winnings + $10,000,000 in Endorsements = $34,750,000 Total for the YEAR.

7). Kobe Bryant; $21,262,500 in Salary/winnings + $10,000,000 in Endorsements = $31,262,500 Total for the YEAR.

8). Allen Iverson; $21,937,500 in Salary/winnings + $7,000,000 in Endorsements = $28,937,500 Total for the YEAR.

9). Derek Jeter; $20,000,000 in Salary/winnings + $8,500,000 in Endorsements = $28,500,000 Total for the YEAR.

10). Peyton Manning; $14,500,000 in Salary/winnings + $13,000,000 in Endorsements = $27,000,000 Total for the YEAR.

Top International Notables:
1). David Beckham (Soccer) - $45,000,000 Total for the Year
2.) Kimi Räikkönen (F1) - $40,100,00 Total for the year
3.) Manny Pacquiao (Boxing) - $40,000,000 Total for the year
4.) Lionel Messi (Soccer) - $39,900,000 Total for the year
5.) Fernando Alonso/Valentino Rossi (Auto Racing) - $35,000,000 for the Year.

Are our individual lives so pathetic, that the only way we find our personal self-pride, self-dignity and self-esteem is by living vicariously through our gladiators?

It would seem so.

Re: The 10 highest-earning American athletes +

Athletes are paid enormous bucks because of their ability to generate enormous bucks. Every time I hear the tired argument of why our grammar school teachers are paid so little and athletes paid so much, I roll my eyes to the economic ignorance. Teachers don't generate a ton of revenue in a direct fashion like athletes do. They are basically a cost center, an expense to perform a service. Yes, their service might indirectly generate revenue in the long run, but there's no direct tie.

Tiger Woods is a home run for Nike, enabling them to basically have a golf department and sell all kinds of golf accessories.

One may say that they don't buy products or services based on commercials and endorsers, but there's a very advanced psychology in advertising, and the subliminal messages being passed have a lot larger effect than a person realizes. Name recognition is major, and with an aggressive ad campaign, the company is basically building a visual and mental relationship with you.

What's also interesting is that athletes aren't even close to the highest earners in America. There's plenty of Wall Street phenoms pulling down 9 figure paychecks that no one talks about, not to mention the CEOs who get shitloads of stock options. There's also little mention of the salaries of media entertainers outside of when they sign new contracts, like Leno who made about 25 mil a year, and Letterman who pulls in over 30 mil a year in salary alone.

The comparison to individuals in other fields is valid.

However there is another way to look at this. Over the past 2 years, bonuses paid to workers in the financial securities industry have fallen 44%. As the overall economy has faltered, so have those compensation packages on Wall Street.

Moreover, Americans personal income has been falling as well, however it seems professional athlete/entertainer incomes are increasing.

If a rising tide lifts all boats in a good economy, shouldn't the opposite be true for all boats...including Tiger's yacht, when the economy tanks?

I completely disagree with this statement, and there is tremendous evidence to refute it. Certain athletes seem to be sheltered from the tide, i.e. Tiger, but many an athlete has seem much less cash than they would have 2 years before. Three of the most obvious in baseball are Manny Ramirez, Bobby Abreu, and Orlando Hudson. NBA revenues have gone down, which means the salary cap goes with it. Same thing for the NHL, where teams are trying to shed themselves of albatross contracts right and left, and are being much more frugal in how they sign stars. Even Tiger isn't completely sheltered from the storm--Buick dropped him as a marquee endorser. The lower level professional leagues are taking huge hits; the Arena Football League has completely disintegrated. That was a league with two major TV contracts.

I don't follow your typical stick & ball sports save for hockey, so I would be disinclined to purchase anything these Top 10 athletes would be hawking. However, slap your logo on a Nascar Sprint Cup race car and you can be sure that I'll purchase your product. I've been brand loyal to Nascar sponsors for decades.

Looking at the list posted here, there's an adding error for Shaq. Either way, I can believe that Shaq would earn more because he's a much more marketable commodity than Kobe ever was, pre or post-rape.

My bad. I hand transcribed the list from the referenced link. Shaq makes $15M in endorsements. Fixed.

With respect to team payrolls decreasing, I don't think so. The marquee professional sports products [NFL/MLB/NBA/NASCAR] look to be recession resistant. I wouldn't count arena Football or Pro beach Volleyball and other 2nd/3rd tier sports entertainment products. Thy simply have not built the celebrities needed.

See this for some detailed NBA current payroll and future salary commitment status:

SO SO SO not the case! The NFL laid off a number of front office staff. Tom Hicks' fortune is in the shitter, and he needs to sell off the Rangers. There's the other examples I gave earlier. NASCAR has lost major sponsorship deals, and with GM in the shitter, they're looking to make a deal with a foreign engine maker. The Detroit Tigers lost their 2nd largest sponsor. And thats just off the top of my head.

This is true, although you've seen an impact on the NFL, NBA and NHL, I think the economy really got bad during or right before their seasons where contracts were largely already in place. I think this coming season you will see a huge impact which is more in line with what MLB has been seeing...

As for Kobe, for a long time he was marketing poison, it's just in the last year or two he has started to come out of it.

The impact will be less on the NBA, NHL, and NFL than the MLB because of the salary caps in place, but there will be an effect.

Maybe the larger discrepancies in projected players salaries may not be as severe but in terms of drops in attendance or ad revenue it should be similar.

You see a lot of deals around the league for a particular game on a particular night or just a general freezing or dropping of ticket prices in MLB. I think you will see similar signs in NBA, NFL and NHL this next year as a whole that things are worse.

I can't see why Shaq is more marketable than Kobe. Kobe has his own shoe right? Does shaq has his? It's an honest question.

If you cant understand why Shaq is twelve times more marketable than Kobe, then you're clearly blinding yourself to Shaq's charisma. And by the way, Shaq had his own shoe years before Kobe had one. As a matter of fact, Reebok was trying to market a Shaq logo to replace the Air Jordan logo when Jordan retired. You clearly are a young child, seeing how you dont remember these things.

In that case tell me why Forbes placed Kobe in number 2 position of World Top Athlete earners ahead of Lebron (6th) and Shaq (11th)

Last time I've checked, 45M is greater than 33M

»www.forbes.com/2009/06/17/top-ea···e_3.html Kobe number 2 with 45M

»www.forbes.com/2009/06/17/top-ea···e_7.html Lebron at 6th with 40M

»www.forbes.com/2009/06/17/top-ea···_13.html Shaq at 11 on 33M

Also how can a (Shaq) Reebok logo replaced a (Jordan) Nike logo?

Because Reebok was trying to push a logo that would hopefully be the most recognizable logo associated with a specific player. Everyone knew the Jordan logo, and Reebok wanted to counter.

As for how Forbes crunched these numbers, and why they're so drastically different from SI's numbers, I couldnt answer that until I see who used what formula.

I guess then Shaq wasn't that marketable at all. I've asked a few co workers who likes to watch NBA too to name a few NBA players they know that has his own shoe. Jordan was the first answer most of the time. Kobe's name was mentioned 4 out of 5. Shaq was never mentioned.

I therefore conclude more people knew Kobe's line of shoe than Shaq's. So maybe Kobe is more marketable then?

Kobe is definitely not a douche. He is a team player (for the last 3 or 4 years at least), took his team to the gold medal at the Olympics, cried with joy when he won it for his country.

He is an American Icon. None of us are perfect, and I believe Kobe is a great basketball player, dad, and husband.

Ummm, no. At least not for me. I can't speak for anyone else, however.

Though there's at least one regular poster in this forum that quite obviously lives a vicarious life through his home team athletes.

Being paid a lot of money for something you enjoy doing is nice work if you can get it-- athletic or otherwise.

Having an inflated opinion of your self-worth to humanity based merely upon your earnings isn't so great.
Unfortunately, that malady seems to afflict athletes to a somewhat large degree.

Part of the problem with applying this to baseball is that you're MUCH more likely to get hurt playing baseball than golf, between the nature of the sport, and that baseball has about 20 times as many contests in a season. Baseball players also saw fit to unionize themselves and act together to collectively negotiate things like guaranteed contracts and being paid when hurt. Years ago team owners were screwing ballplayers over. Comiskey was the primary reason the White Sox attempted to throw the World Series because of actions like sitting Eddie Cicotte to avoid paying him a performance bonus. Mickey Mantle hit for the Triple Crown and was still required to either take a pay cut next season or hit the bricks, without the option to play for another team. The Curt Floods and Marvin Millers of the world worked for unionization. I'm actually an anti-union guy, but if you can get it done, more power to ya. No one is stopping golfers from doing the same thing. Most pro golfers actually struggle tremendously, because they have to foot their own expenses. Only the elite make any real serious cash out of the deal.
