My cell phone, and I suspect many others, forwards a call after a set period of time -- around 30 seconds, rather than after a certain number of rings. You might test this by forwarding to a number that will ring and measuring the amount of time before you hear the ring, compared to the amount of time before GV voicemail picks up.

I have noticed that GV will pick up if you press "*" while the phone is still ringing (i.e., before you hear your outgoing message). This is because GV actually takes the call even before the caller knows that it has been answered. The reason I ask is that I would like to set my business lines to get forwarded to my google voice # after 4 rings & on busy which isn't a problem. The problem is that google voice rings for two or three more times even though there aren't any phone numbers listed for google to call.

I've tried different setting, but hopefully I'm missing something because otherwise I'll have to sign up for a regular voicemail service. If there isn't a way, is there a voicemail service that inexpensive, sends audio messages to email, & maybe transcribes the the voicemail as well. (would ipkall work w/ an incorrect sip uri or will it still ring a couple times before it realizes the uri isn't responding)

(AT&T swears they don't have a way to check messages other than by phone, but what's this link for? »vm.att.com )
