Macro is most certainly NOT for portraits. Whoever told you that needs to go back to photography school hehehe. (They either don't know what they're doing, or are confusing the term Macro for something else.)

A wide-angle lens, perhaps. I've actually done some awesome creative shots of kids with a wide angle. But I don't even know how someone would use a real macro lens for it.
