Re: The 10 highest-earning American athletes +

Athletes are paid enormous bucks because of their ability to generate enormous bucks. Every time I hear the tired argument of why our grammar school teachers are paid so little and athletes paid so much, I roll my eyes to the economic ignorance. Teachers don't generate a ton of revenue in a direct fashion like athletes do. They are basically a cost center, an expense to perform a service. Yes, their service might indirectly generate revenue in the long run, but there's no direct tie.

Tiger Woods is a home run for Nike, enabling them to basically have a golf department and sell all kinds of golf accessories.

One may say that they don't buy products or services based on commercials and endorsers, but there's a very advanced psychology in advertising, and the subliminal messages being passed have a lot larger effect than a person realizes. Name recognition is major, and with an aggressive ad campaign, the company is basically building a visual and mental relationship with you.

What's also interesting is that athletes aren't even close to the highest earners in America. There's plenty of Wall Street phenoms pulling down 9 figure paychecks that no one talks about, not to mention the CEOs who get shitloads of stock options. There's also little mention of the salaries of media entertainers outside of when they sign new contracts, like Leno who made about 25 mil a year, and Letterman who pulls in over 30 mil a year in salary alone.

I think I heard something about this in the last year.

But you never hear about the Frank Quattrones of the world until they get arrested.

The comparison to individuals in other fields is valid.

However there is another way to look at this. Over the past 2 years, bonuses paid to workers in the financial securities industry have fallen 44%. As the overall economy has faltered, so have those compensation packages on Wall Street.

Moreover, Americans personal income has been falling as well, however it seems professional athlete/entertainer incomes are increasing.

If a rising tide lifts all boats in a good economy, shouldn't the opposite be true for all boats...including Tiger's yacht, when the economy tanks?

I completely disagree with this statement, and there is tremendous evidence to refute it. Certain athletes seem to be sheltered from the tide, i.e. Tiger, but many an athlete has seem much less cash than they would have 2 years before. Three of the most obvious in baseball are Manny Ramirez, Bobby Abreu, and Orlando Hudson. NBA revenues have gone down, which means the salary cap goes with it. Same thing for the NHL, where teams are trying to shed themselves of albatross contracts right and left, and are being much more frugal in how they sign stars. Even Tiger isn't completely sheltered from the storm--Buick dropped him as a marquee endorser. The lower level professional leagues are taking huge hits; the Arena Football League has completely disintegrated. That was a league with two major TV contracts.

I don't follow your typical stick & ball sports save for hockey, so I would be disinclined to purchase anything these Top 10 athletes would be hawking. However, slap your logo on a Nascar Sprint Cup race car and you can be sure that I'll purchase your product. I've been brand loyal to Nascar sponsors for decades.
