| Problems with IRC
I've been having problems with IRC over the past few months when connected through my TekSavvy DSL connection: I timeout and disconnect frequently (where "frequently" varies but ranges from a couple times per hour to every few minutes). It's a small but persistent problem that's driving me bonkers.
I've tried to rule out: - Other network activity on the line -- the disconnects happen regardless of what other applications are active the connection. - Time of day -- no correlation that I can find. - Client configuration -- the same client configuration used to work on this line, staying connected for hours. It still stays connected for hours if I take my laptop to another location (e.g., work or the library) - IRC network -- this happens with both the Freenode and Mozilla IRC networks. - Server -- connecting to a different server makes no appreciable difference.
The client is XChat on Fedora 10/11. The IRC networks are irc.freenode.net and irc.mozilla.org.
Any suggestions/ideas appreciated. |

| reply to ctyler Does your client notice being disconnected ? Or does it just stop working until it realises there is a timeout and only then does it mark your connection as "off line" ?
Is it possible you are just being kicked from the server by some "funny" operator who is bored and likes to pick on individual users and bother them ? (If so, your client should have a lot of a message of you having been kicked from the server (not just the channel).
Is your DSL connection (DSL line and PPPoE session) uninterrupted during this time ? If you call your ISP, they can see how many PPPoE session disconnects you have had lately). |

| I had problems with this type of behaviour some time ago. If I trie dto send a file or a initiate a provate chat, it would mess up the NAT in the router and the router lost awareness of the TCP connection between me and the ISR server. Neither side knew that the other side was unreacheable until a timeout occured.
However, just chatting in a room was fine. DCC commands were the ones that screwed the router. |
