Re: WOW are a Bunch of Morons Regarding LNP

I agree. I'd be willing to bet the Comcast reps are the inept ones and can't figure out how to port the number.

I talked to both companies LNP departments. WOW themselves told me that they want 7 days but will do it in six for me. I talked to a supervisor at WOW's LNP department and she herself entered the port information while I was on the phone with her. She was the one that told me it would take until the 9th as the earliest date when things could be ported over. The 10th is when they are sending someone to collect their equipment. When I asked if it could be done sooner, she said no. She wasn't mean about it, but said it couldn't be done.

Comcast had in their notes that WOW hadn't acknowledged the transfer request and WOW told CC that 5 days was too fast. I called CC back after my talk with the WOW LNP people (WOW requested that I do that and have CC resubmit the request since my number was now set up as a "port out"). The CC person had me on hold and immediately contacted WOW to set up the port and get a confirmation number. She then told me that the WOW person told her that it takes that long because they have to close out their billing, etc.

Both sets of facts reconcile. WOW's just slow as molasses in Alaska in February for some reason.

I think of cable phone as being similar to VoIP.
Two weeks is the norm for VoIP.
There is some FCC things I think about 3 days, but good luck there.

The good old days VoIP LNP was a month if done fast.
If they are their own CLEC, it would go fast.

VoIP to cell phone (Vonage to Sprint) was 7 days for me a couple years back.

If you want to know who owns your number, try »www.tnid.org

Also »www.telcodata.us/telcodata/telco is good to see what numbers are in a physical rate center.
If your number is outside CC's rate center, LNP would be unlikely.

I assume all WOW customers have them, no?

My parents and I do, and we're both with WOW.

»WideOpenWest Cable Phone Service is a thread I posted to see what they say ...

Its easier to analyze if your rate center or the 1st 6 digits of your number were known>
555-555-xxxx

These are what list for MI - didn't think about searching that way.

But you are in IL

Thanks for the interesting info. So, Sigecom is simply a dba for WOW.

My phone number is 630-355-xxxx, but it isn't listed in the telcodata.us site you listed directly above. It was in the links you put a few messages above.

So in theory any CLEC in the Napier Rate Center should be able to do LNP for your number.

Many VoIP are with Level3 so that means LNP to VoIP should be possible too. The advantage of VoIP, is you don't need to physically live where your phone number is. If you moved to MI, you could keep your same number for example. E911 is a Nomadic E911. Likely WOW! and CC do not have Nomadic E911, so they depend more on physical location.

CAVEAT: Only speculating about CC and WOW!

I'm not a big fan of the standard VoIP services. I don't like the thought of having to deal with QoS issues and the like. WOW and CC phone are more along the likes of what I prefer, even though those are VoIP as well.

That being said, as my kids are getting older, I'm not as concerned about the E911 issues, so VoIP may be something I consider in the future. Definitely WOW and CC are not nomadic.
