Hi Cudni,

HP wanted to install some updates. One successfully installed and the other had a fatal error. These updates related to the printer.

McAffee said the computer wasn't protected. I managed to get it to update and then it said it was protected.

The computer was also getting a message from IE 8 congratulating the installation and saying that some HP thingy was not compatible with IE8, so I told it to disable it when it offered to.

Prior to leaving I uninstalled 2 old javas and Live Update from Semantic (since he has Mcaffee) and an MSN toolbar.

We changed his desktop wallpaper, icons and gadgets but I have the feeling that when he logs off, those changes will disappear.

Sincerely, Libra

Windows has always had a funny way of unexpectedly doing that.

Thank you chachazz. Will desksave work under these circumstances: Windows can't find his profile and is giving him a temporary profile and mentions that any changes made will be lost?

Edit: Do you just click on Save Primary Layout and Restore Primary Layout when you sign back into the account? And if we have a shell extension then we could just right-click on the desktop for it? And I think Save at Logoff should be checked in the options?

Sincerely, Libra

Sounds like XP may be corrupt in some way and need a repair, however, the experts may know better.

As to DeskSave, well, if there's no stable user account, I guess it's not going to work so well. As the only user on this machine, yes, I save as Primary; and when XP or Vista decides to get psychotic and blowup my desktop, DeskSave to the rescue!

His computer is Vista and I think he has a corrupt profile. He said he has nothing saved in his profile and that everything is stored in his Yahoo mail. I have no idea of how to save anything from his Yahoo mail, especially since you lose everything in that profile if there's a way to download it.

DeskSave does sound good under normal circumstances. Thank you.

Have you tired creating a new profile (login account)?

All yahoo email stuff is stored on their servers so you would just have to set up the browser with the bookmarks to yahoo and other sites.

Hi Indy,

I thought he told me he set up a profile with his son's help and had the same problem. I found out today that another account which was already created, had the same problems, not a new one.

I believe this problem started when he shut down the computer while HP was installing an update.

He gave the laptop to his son in law, whose brother is an IBM programmer. Hopefully, he'll be able to fix it.

Thanks for letting me know about the Yahoo mail being on the servers, I wasn't aware of that.

Sincerely, Libra
