Re: [MB] Help! I appear to be disconnected from the internet!

It seems I managed to solve the problem myself.

It turns out I had to update the firmware for my router. I was a bit hesitant when I tried updating it because I don't know where to look but I managed to figure out how and everything works exactly like I wanted it!

Thanks for all the replies and advice you guys have pointed out! Thanks very much!

Ah, I've tried installing the D-Link again, but it always seemed to give me solid lights for everything whenever I plug in my cables in. That's why I had to switch it out.

Thanks for the reply, though.

Well, you should try it for sure. That way you could tell if it was indeed the router.

Don't forget to turn off your modem, then hook up your other router, then turn your modem back on. It has to assign a new ip to the dlink router.

Are you sure the Dlink works? Why did you switch it out, was it giving you problems?

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

Here are my results:

»/linequality/nil/2538531 -- Line Quality test

@Komal: I've checked for any updates for the firmware, nothing has showed up.

There hasn't been any problems according to the test, so now I might suspect the router now. Should I just replace the Belkin router with a D-Link Wireless 108G I had before?

To be honest, I think it's your Belkin Router. I had one before, I tend to buy a few of them just to try out new ones. My Belkin was having the same issues, random disconnects. Was a huge issue on my Xbox live. Even with everything set properly, firewall, portforward, new firmware etc... it was still doing it.
I would try using a new router. I recommend either Linksys or D-Link, but there are lots of good ones out there.

Try it without the router and see what happens, and yes, you have to unplug your modem if you're going to go from being hooked up to the router to being hooked up directly to the computer. Let the modem hand out a new ip address based on the new mac address.

I really suspect that Belkin router!

If all computers are experiencing it, it is likely a router issue.

Check if any new firmware is available for the router.

To change to a direct connection, you have to unplug the modem after you have connected the computer to get a new IP address. If it still has the same problems with a direct connection, use the tools on this website, like the line quality test and smoke ping to see if there are any problems there.

Thanks for the reply.

All computers on the network are receiving problems similar to this.

I have also tried connecting the cable directly to the computer. I end up with little or no connectivity. When it's back with the router, I can surf the internet, but can't do the things mentioned above.

Also, how would I do that, if I may ask?

You said it's one computer out of 3. Are the other 2 computers experiencing any difficulties?

If this is something regular, I'd suggest you rin a continuous ping, so that you can see if there's any dropped packets or lag spikes around the time of the disconnects.

Hello, I recently signed up on this website, seeking for help regarding my situation. Despite all my attempts into trying to look for a solution or trying everything I know of to solve this, my efforts were fruitless. I'll list my specs first before going on with my situation.

My specs:

Router: Belkin Wireless G+ MIMO Router (F5D9230-4)
Computer: Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 3
ISP: Shaw Cable High Speed Internet
Antivirus: Avira AntiVir Personal
Firewall: Windows XP firewall
(I think it is, anyway... That's what my parents told me. My family has been trying to solve this for a while now, but they aren't technically savvy enough to try to resolve this.)

The computer is a part of a network with three other computers in the same house and we are connected to the internet via the router which is connected to the modem.

(I'm not sure what else to add in, but I'll add in more info if I can!)

Anyway, my internet connection has been on the fritz with random disconnections with completely no internet about three months ago. After being fed up and annoyed for trying fix it ourselves and resetting our modem and router each time, we decided to call a tech about it. They came in, did their job, installed a new modem (the old one was something we had like for 10 years now, and probably had to be replaced, the new modem is from Motorolla) and now we no longer have the random disconnections. The problem is that whenever I try to run IRC, chat programs or even online games (Flash MMOs, Steam Games, MMORPGs etc.), I end up getting disconnected every few minutes before being reconnected again. However, I can surf the internet fine.

My dad doesn't want to admit that our internet isn't running as smoothly as it used to because we just called the tech guys and surfing the internet is just about as satisfactory as the family needed (Downloading seems to be okay). I have done the following things (not in particular order):

- Power cycling both the modem and router
- Resetting my router's settings
- Changing the ethernet cables around
- ipconfig /release and /renew
- Scan my computer for viruses and other malware using my antivirus software, Windows Defender and Panda Security's Free Online scan (None came up that raised a concern, thankfully)
-ran that Test Line quality on dslreports.com (but I'm not pingable, apparently. I don't know why. I also did the instructions on the "Make yourself pingable FAQ" but no go. Results aren't comprehensive.)

I'm not sure if there were more things I could've done, but I want know if there is anything more I could do on my end before I should talk my dad to call a tech again.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and for any suggestions to help this.
