Free "call forwarding" service ?

Does anyone know of a free "virtual call forwarding" service?

I want to be able to create a "throw away" number that I can give out to people, but have that number forwarded to my real phone, thereby hiding my actual phone number.

I think Google is coming out with something like this, but it's not available to everyone yet.. i've done some searches, but i dont see anything that is free.

voip.ms, future-nine.com and voipo.com have really inexpensive services like that, but not free.

it's the network time to forward the calls to your cell or landline. wholesale cost could be anywhere between 1/2¢ to 1-1/2¢ per minute -- and you want someone else to pay that for you because...?

Because Obama says "i deserve it" and it's not fair that i should pay, so someone should foot the bill..

Seriously - i figured the caller would pay - otherwise i would not have thought it would be free.. I guess i'll wait for GoogleVoice, which i think will do what it want... for free..

yah, GoogleVoice will do it for no money ... time will tell if there is some other cost -- privacy, advertising, etc.

Not free, but skype will do that for ~$3 a month.

As stated, google voice is free. But like all things google, there's a catch. What it is I don't know. The service is new and the unknowns haven't been exposed yet. I think the old cliche "if it's too good to be true..." applies here.

One technical detail you should be aware of: If you call back someone who called you at your google number, the actual number you are calling from will appear on their caller ID, not your google number.

If you want your google number to show up on caller ID, then you have to call into the system, access your account, and follow the prompts to return the call through the google network. Or, you can log in on line and call through your computer. Seems a bit awkward, but if you are bent on keeping your "real" number to yourself, that's what you'll need to do.

You can't sign up for google voice so until they open it up that would not be an option.

The catch is; We have your online identity. We know where you browse. We know who you email, and who emails you. We now have your phone number, and we know who you call and who calls you. It's just a matter of time till we know where you live and what you look like.

One day when Google grows up from being your "Little Helper", it'll become your "Big Brother". "Might we place a few free web cams in your environment so we can "help" you manage your security?"

We are the google, resistance is futile.
