[XPPro] Display setting error

Tried setting my display to a new setting to be able to fit poker tables on screen better. Display changed ok, but it wasn't right. Tried to change it to another setting and got the following message;

An exception occured while trying to run "C:\WINDOWS\system32\Shell32dll,Control_RunDLL"C:\WINDOWS\system32\desk.cpl,"Display"

I've tried rebooting a couple of times and still get the same message.

Thanks for any and all replies in advance.

Can you check the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Controls Folder\Display\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers

If you expand PropertySheetHandlers what sub-folders exist besides PlusPack CPL Extension sub-folder?

Whoa!

Not good on computer, have no idea what you mean or how to go about getting it.

Could you guide me (talk to me like a 5 year old) to get the info you are asking for?

Thanks

Looking for this key involves going into the registry; Start>Run>Regedit. Then just follow down the tree (explorer like) until you find the key.

BE CAREFUL. Don't do anything except try to locate the key without further assistance.

Click the Start button from the taskbar
Choose Run, that should bring up a box
in the box type Regedit
that should take you to the registry
Then follow the path MSeng has typed out... just click on each + next to the area you want to drill down into.

When you get to PropertySheetHandlers write down anything you see there besides PlusPack and report back.

Don't change anything, you are just looking to see what if anything else is there, just click the x to close the whole thing after you have the info.

Below PropertySheetHandlers is a file named, PlusPack CPL Extention, that's it. When I click on it, get
NAME Type Data
ab (default) REG_SZ {41E300E0-78B6-11ce-849B- 444553540000}

OK, that is as it should be, so that is not where the problem is.

Can you check what display adapter and version of the display adapter driver:

Start > Run > dxdiag.exe > OK > Display

Under the Display tab, what is the "Name" of the Device? What are the main drivers and version?

You could try uninstalling the display adapter driver and then reinstall the display adapter driver using the latest version available:

Ok, did that. I have a different display in the way of resolution, but when I try to click on "Display" in the Control Panel, I'm still getting the same message and can not change it.

1 edit

Can you open "Display" this way?:

Start > Run > desk.cpl > OK

As long as we are digging in the registry...

Right above the Controls entry is the Control Panel list, in there is a folder named "don't load", what are the entries in there?

The exact path is:

HKEY_Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Control Panel/don't load

If desk.cpl is in there, do not remove it yet, just tell us if desk.cpl is in there. If it is there, it is likely due to a bug in some display intensive program that does not want you altering the display properties while the game is running, but, and this is the bug, did not/does not remove the registry setting when the game exited/was uninstalled.

Three of those AB things

(Default) (value not set)
infocardcpl.cpl
speech.cpl

All are REG_SZ

That appears to look OK.

Can you restart the computer in "Safe Mode" and see if you can open "Display" in the Control Panel.

Also, have you every installed a third party desktop customization program such as WindowBlinds?

Sorry, again I'm stupid, how do I start in Safe mode and do the rest?

No I have never added anything like that. I haven't tried to change the display in ages, this is a first.

To get to Safe Mode, restart the computer and then try tapping the F8 key:

Ready to throw this out and go buy a MAC.

Tapped the F8 Key, went url you posted and read up on it. What I'm getting is;

Please Select Boot Device
Samsung HD160JJ
HL-DT-ST GCE8527B
HL-DT-ST-DVDRAM GSA-HION
1st Floppy Drive

Arrow to move selection
Enter to select Boot Device
Esc to boot using default

Tried all of them, none get me Safe Mode
????????????

On some computers tapping the F8 key when the computer starts brings up the Boot Menu.

In that case can you press F8 just after the "Del to Setup - F8 to Boot menu" (or similar) message appears and disappears.

Ok, got to safe mode, was able to get into Control Panel and Display. Could change the settings but they did not take. Start up computer normal, able to go to Control Panel, Display and change the settings. As soon as it did though, the error came up. Settings changed, but can't do it again. ????????
